I posted this in the general forum but it should be here I guess. I want one of those pictures under my name like most of you have. I have a url and I have put it into my profile but it says "invalid picture type" I've got it small enough and I have tried .gif's and .jpg's but neither type works. What am i doing wrong?
yeah, whine whine whine LOL www.jeffgordon.com <img src="jg24small.jpg>

You are right, your pic does need a URL to be used as an avatar. Something I have not tried, but if you load a pic into a message using the "attach file" box when you are creating a message... doing that uploads your picture to DocJohn's server and then creates a link to it in your message so that it displays. By clicking on "properties" you can find the URL that is assigned to that image, and then you might be able to use that URL to load it as an avatar in future posts.
I'm not sure if it would work, and if it does, I'm not sure if that would cause any problems for DocJohn like requiring extra server bandwidth. My guess is that it would not, but it might be a good idea to check with him before trying this. I've been hosting a few pics for people on my webspace but with my current financial problems I've had trouble keeping up payments to my web host and don't want to risk going over my alotted bandwidth right now, or else I'd offer to do it myself. What I can do though, if you find a way to have the pic hosted, I can edit and crop it down to the right size for use as an avatar for you, you could just email me the pic and I can edit it and mail it back to you. Angel-- I copied and pasted this from a thread on July 25, Dexter's reply to another member... does this help at all? ...slip sliding away... slip sliding away....

HA... I thought sky was channeling me for a second there
![]() I put a reply in your other message, but want to clarify... first thing I can check is can you give me the URL that you are using to access your pic? I am not sure why you are getting that message... having the URL may help me troubleshoot the problem. ------------------------------------ --http://www.idexter.com

I tried saving it as a jpg too but Dr John's server still says it's the "wrong format" thanks Dex. www.jeffgordon.com www.nascar.com www.tonystewart.com

OK... I can reference the image from my browser so that is not the problem. I'm going to try to link to it in this message to see if it displays OK here...

Ok... it displays here OK for me (I presume everyone else sees it too?)
I think I found the problem... it is a bug with this forum software it think. The text box where you put the URL to your image only allows a certain number of characters in it, and your URL is too long. The last few letters are getting cut off. DocJohn can fix that but I don't know how much time he has as he is preparing to move the database to another server this weekend. As an alternate fix, you can rename your graphic from "jg24small.gif" to "jg.gif" and that should work. There are only 7 characters being cut off as it is now. If you rename it, upload it again with the new name, and link to the new name, it should work. ------------------------------------ --http://www.idexter.com
(Edited by dexter on 08/17/04 06:17 PM.)

OK there's another problem...
Angelfire does not allow you to link to pictures from their site. Likely because it uses their bandwidth. All I see now is an "anglefire" logo in its place, and even the link that worked for me yesterday (in the message above) is only showing the logo now. This is common with free picture hosting services... they can easily control how much disc space they give you but if they allowed linking the bandwidth could easily get out of control for them. I thought it was OK with Angelfire when the picture worked yesterday but apparently not. You will have to find another place to host your photo. Try checking with your internet service provider... they often provide a limited amount of free space for you to host a personal website along with your account... and since you pay them for your ISP service the bandwidth usually isn't limited (well it is limited, but they should allow you to link and just cut you off if the bandwidth goes above a certain amount each month). ------------------------------------ --http://www.idexter.com
