I just noticed half of my laptop is really hot and asked my husband, a computer engineer about it and he explained it is my microprocessor and they sometimes do that. But touching one spot on the bottom of the computer it literally is like burning hot and I complained about that and he said, "Yes, they get lots of people in the emergency room with burned tummies from their laptop" and said he wasn't kidding!

When I got my laptop I did some searching about safe ways to use it. The article I found said that they're engineered with little feet, and they elevate the laptop enough to keep it from overheating - if its on a flat surface. The article said never put it on fabric for very long, like a pillow or the bed becuase fabric clogs the vents the keep it cool. I use mine on a tv tray at the couch, and on a laptray in bed to keep this from happening. It gets warm but not hot that way.

Perna,

I have a lap desk for my laptop to prevent the fans from being blocked and overheating the computer, but now they sell cute little platforms for them that have a fan and cooling system.

Ok, I HAD to get a cute little cooling mat, and it's not so terribly cute! I ordered it from Dell, it was in the same slot as the computer but it seems too small.

Yes, this is the main difference between laptops and notebooks. Notebooks generally come with centrino which runs cooler and doesn't produce the ill effects that heat does to electronics. Even so, it's best to not block the fan below, and use a flat surface or even a specially created lap pad holder that dips in the middle for extra cooling.
