I love the option of hiding forums that trigger us. I'd like to also be able to hide user created social groups that do not interest me or trigger me. I'm sure others would too!

You have to expressly click to see the groups. Why not just don't go there? Also, the posting isn't readily available. You could just go right on past the ones you don't want to see.

Yep, SM is right....since you have to actually maneuver to get to the user groups, it's up to the member to create their best experience and if they are triggering, then we suggest that you don't go there to keep yourself safe.

I'm not sure that DocJohn would be able to make certain user groups visible/invisible at this point. Sorry

sabby
Thanks for this!

Okay....other people make suggestions and they get the "great idea". I put something and get naysayers, and not even straight from the horse's mouth!

SM & Sabby, I don't just have to "expressly click" to see the groups. If I want to see what new groups are created, I have to go the "social groups" link. This will show the groups. How else am I going to find out??? I don't see what the difference is between someone's suggestion about hiding FORUMS on the index, and my suggestion about hiding GROUPS. No, you don't see the posts...but you DO see the groups, and what they are about, just like you see the forums on the main index page.

It could just be something like "Show me groups created since my last log in" or "Show me groups created in the last 2 weeks" or stuff like that.

So, I can't "just go past them" or I'll miss newly created ones I may want to see.

"Up to the member to create the best experience and just not go there"....That's what I'm doing by posting my suggestions. It doesn't hurt to ask! If they cannot or will not do it, fine. I can't be the only person on this whole site who would enjoy that setting option in their profile!

Why couldn't whoever suggested hiding forums just "not go there" if they are triggering? Because they can't see the index without going there. People cannot see the groups without going there.

If it worked for forums, it might work for social groups. If not, I'm sure a reply will be posted from an administrator. Only they would know.

Sorry you are so upset about this.....but I happen to be an administrator. I only stated that I didn't think it was possible to do this.....but I could be wrong. I'll be happy to send this link to DocJohn for him to answer personally.

I saw that you are an administrator after I already clicked the "post" button in all my fury. It just irks me when people act like a person's suggestion is asking for too much. I just thought members would be more tactful here, being the kind of site it is. But I guess people are people, even here.

Go figure? (((owl))) Yes, people are people here too! Remember, many of our members (and moderators) are dealing with their own IRL issues too. They volunteer here to help DocJohn provide the wonderful site for all to use as they can to help heal.

parenthetically, i play chess over the internet for socialization and there are some real abusive characters at this internet chess club. But the club has a way of dealing with this problem in their webserver's user interface.
One can type " +cen username" at the command line in the telnet applications chess players use to chat and one will never hear the remarks of angry disturbed racist people.
I mention this to demonstrate that the tools exist for users to modify their experiences in many applications. While I do not know if this is the best policy here-- although I am sure there would be fewer suicidal posts if no one could read them--I do not doubt that there is some feasibility for owl's request if even over the medium term in technical development.
best regards
pi

Owl, next time you get furious because this website can't protect you 100% from whatever triggers you have, maybe you can stop and think before posting in RED. Some of us here get migraines and seizures when we look at so much red. Didn't think that was possible, did you?

Thank you.

PS as you can see, Doc John, as hard as he tries, can't make all of the people happy all of the time. Personally, I wish he'd delete the color red as well as orange from being able to be used anywhere on the site. I'm not going to ask, though. I take responsibility for myself and my own self care.

There is no option to hide social groups at this time, but I will certainly keep it in mind for future reference.

I was mostly pissed about the reaction on naysayers on my suggestions, and not about the 100% protection I cannot get. Even the Secret Service can't protect the candidates 100%.
Yes, I knew about red. I knew it could trigger, but like you told me just "don't look" at the groups I don't want to see, you can just"not look" at my post. I chose red to express the "tone" of my post, in spite of the emoticons. You know it's not what you wanted to see anyway, as it was going to be a rebuttal to what was posted. As you said, "take responsibility for myself" and just scroll quickly past the red post. AND, if you were going into this thread to view other technical subjects, that's just like I was wanting to go into the main view of social groups to see what groups have been added.

AND, BTW, I DO understand about migraines, and once in chat someone asked me not to use red. And guess what....(gasp!!!!)I was nice enough not to do it!!!!!!! I could have used red anyway, and red here too, but you see I didn't. I hope this makes you happy.

If red is such a trigger, it shouldn't even be AVAILABLE, especially on a site like this.

I don't expect 100% protection from stuff. But someone makes a suggestion about hiding forums that trigger them, and it was implemented. Why couldn't THEY just "take responsibility?" My suggestion is no different. I'm a nice person trying to suggest things that could benefit everyone, not just ME.

This new software has great features, such as social groups created by users.

But it does not hurt to ask I say, and I will always ask, whether someone thinks I should or not. And on that note, I'm posting another suggestion in technical support as soon as I check out this one feature first.

No one can make everyone happy all the time. If that were the case, the world would be a better place, with maybe not even so much anxiety, depression, and panicks.

Okay, so they can't do it. Case closed. THANK YOU.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
