I just want to have a good connection to the internet, surely that's not too much to ask for. I'm blaming the internet provider that I'm with although I'm not absolutely certain. I have had countless problems with them and if I ring them up, I either can't understand what they are saying or they drag out the conversation, knowing it's eating up my phone bill.
The problem I am having is that I have a good internet connection in the daytime but when it gets to a certain time of night, it just clicks on and off non-stop. This is infuriating and I rely on the internet. Anyhow, I'm in the UK and need recommendations on a good provider for broadband. I have heard BT is ok but they are expensive. Does anyone know whether Sky is any good? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Katheryn, I have been having an awful time tonight. Couldn't get online at all for two hours. Now I have got online, it keeps clicking on and off every couple of minutes.
![]() I have rang them and they made me go through all the usual things, waste of time that was, and now they are doing a line test. I'm fed up! ![]()

I don't know how you do it, I'll be able to find out and tell you later tonight though... brother will know
But it's worth checking out what 'works best' in your area. Some internet connections/companies don't work as well in some areas as others do. I used to be on BT and it was awful connection around here, but I'm on Demon now and it's much better. I'll find out for you how you can find what works best in your area. Molly

hehehe I know what you meant when you asked that...hehehehe just thought I'd interject.
That the service becomes a big issue at night when everyone is home and on the computer... might tell you something if you are on dial-up? Sorry for not knowing if you've said this or not. If you are on dial-up, do a search for a new access number. The newer numbers (for anyone) have fewer customers and you won't have that problem. I will never go back to dial up, unless it's the only thing available. Also, if you are on dial up, make sure you have a in-line filter on your phone line. One at each phone/connection used in the home. Line noise might not be such a big deal when fewer people are on, but may be too much otherwise, for a good connection. IDK about there, but here you can buy them in a dollar store...it's a small rectangle box, not quite 2"s long by 1" wide on a short phone cord. (you know this I'm sure ![]() I always have to ask for a manager if I have a question/issue...they speak much clearer English. The other's well, it's all garble to me with a hearing problem. ![]()

![]() ![]() I have a few filters and have changed them round and such, didn't make any difference. I'm hoping my provider has done something about this but I'll have to ring them to find out. I dread speaking to them as it is such hard work, but I'll have to later on. Once they have sorted it out I need to change provider as soon as possible otherwise I'll end up with no hair left.

I have been with BT at home ever since connecting with the internet in late 2003 and have never had any problems with it at all, never any outages. It is quite expensive though for what you get. Maybe you could look into the Post Office broadband. I have no idea how reliable it is but it is certainly cheaper than BT. And includes line rental in the price.

Dear Pegasus,
You may test your link performance, via the following site: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ As Sky suggested, you may see it slow down in the evening. Consider testing it at different times of day, and different days of the week. You may find a pattern of performance degradation. Also, you could compare your results, with the results of friends and colleagues. I tested my link yesterday, against the NYC server. My download speed was 13,647 kps. My upload speed was 1,880. Please don't be distraught, if your speeds are substantially lower. I just downgraded, to a service, where my maximum download speed will be 256 kps, and my maximum upload speed will be 128 kps. I downgraded, because my promotional rate on the premium service, I had, expired. I wish you the best, Larry |
