My printer died and I am sick of going to the library, or worse, driving to Kinko's (a long way, esp. in a Wisconsin winter), to print stuff, which I still occasionally need to do. But I've been looking at ads, and here is my question: Does anybody know if it is still possible to buy "just" a printer? I don't want to print photos (do that with an online service). I don't need to copy, scan, fax, or make lunch. I need to print. That is all. I don't want to spend money I don't have for stuff I don't need.

Anybody got any ideas, I'll take 'em!

Just a couple suggestions. Also check out hp printers--they have good ones for as little as $49.

I know that the Deskjets are good for just basic, everyday printing. I don't know much about other Companies products, though.

Keep in mind that these Companies make their most money off of the ink! Pay close attention to the cost per page and the outright cost of the ink.

You might get a printer for $30, but the ink might cost you $25!

daughter needed a printer for school and got a cheap lexmark for about 20 bucks at walmart. when the ink finally ran out, she ended up getting a new printer for 20 bucks again because the ink for it was more than a new printer.

For basic B&W printing, I highly recommend an HP. Buying new, we've used this one with good success:

($99.99 with free shipping)

Buying used, I look on eBay for an HP 5 laserjet, which are great, durable workhorses. I bought one used a few years ago and it continues to go strong (not unlike this one

Because these are heavy printers, though, watch out for the shipping cost.

Good luck!

you got to look at cost of ink, we have used leximark and like wanttoheal said its cheaper to replace the printer than hthe ink, we had a hp printer which was god again ink was an average price but i couldnt find ink cheap, so we ended up back on the epson we must of gone through several epsoms the ink can be bought cheaper here down to as little as £2 a cartridge for the basic printer i only pay £about 20 for the four idivual carrtridges for the all in one printer normal price for epsiom ink is about £35

ink can be bought cheap online and you can look around for cheaper alternatives to the brand make of ink saving money quality i find just as good and we use it for photos

Thanks, everyone. Based on the responses here, I've decided (for the time being, anyway) to continue giving the library 10 cents a page. I rarely need to print more than $1 worth at a time anyway.

Printer ink has always been outrageous. Almost everything I do anymore, whether actual work or looking for work, sending apps, etc, is required to be done online. It just would be convenient, when it's 20 degrees and there's a foot of snow on the ground, to have one at home. But it's certainly not a necessity at this point. I appreciate all the tips, though -- if I ever do get around to buying myself one, I'll keep them in mind.
