Hi fellow sufferers,

Does anyone relate to misanthropy?

Misanthropy: "Misanthropy is the general hatred, dislike, distrust or contempt of the human species or human nature."

I believe this is a hallmark of PTSD. Anyone else relate?

Thanks,
HD7970ghz

Definitely applies to me, as well. There are few exceptions to it and even then I still have distrust. Didn't realize there was a word for it.

Yes... this applies to me. I sometimes have joked that I'm an equal opportunity bigot. I don't like anybody! Sometimes I think it's probably more me than other people. But, ultimately, it really doesn't matter one way or the other. I just keep to myself. I consider it to be my gift to the world... or at least that tiny portion of it I inhabit.

OH my I thought it was just my broken self that was thinking that. I always hated being human and felt I was born at the wrong time or wrong species. I just don't feel like I belong here.

How can anyone like humanity considering all the evil deeds they have done? Child abuse is practically encouraged in the human race in all societies. Misanthropy is simply the most logical response after viewing the copious evidence.

This is so true. I am so heartbroken!! Humanity truly is going down the dumps and it is so hurtful. History shows us that anyone who has power over someone else is bound to abuse their power... Breaks my heart. And for what? Do people actually get joy from seeing others suffer!? If so, how!? Am I missing something? I often feel all alone because from where I stand, there isn't a single human being who shares the same set of morals and values that I have! Yet it seems like most people know deep down when they have done something wrong. Perhaps they like to blame their behaviour on their own human fallibility but in truth it is just an excuse they tell themselves so they don't have to look at themselves in the mirror. Seems this nonsensical stuff is becoming commonplace and I am scared to know just how common these things are.

That is why I have teddy bears.

I was out walking the other evening and a guy in a sports car didn't stop when I was crossing the street. I kind of stumbled. Then he made a crude gesture and raced off.

It just made me feel like...people!

On top of that the damage in the streets of Philadelphia (an old home of mine) by Eagles fans...made me shudder. Breaking glass in store windows...turning over planters and wrecking the trees that were in them. I guess all fueled by alcohol.

Turn the page...

There was also a story about a New Jersey state trooper who saved a newborn from choking. Another story about a kid in Queens who saved another kid from drowning but lost his own life...

For every bad story there is a good one.

I am not the forgiving type and I don't see why I have to forgive an aggressive guy in a sports car who thought it was funny to pretend he was going to run me down.

But there are so many redeeming stories and it is best to focus on them. Advice I need to give myself.

I don't absolve myself from being human. I can however, look in the mirror and know that I haven't maliciously harmed anyone like so many others seem to do. I refuse to do to others what has been done to me; I believe this is what the world needs in order to stop the generational trauma from being passed on to future generations.

I have made mistakes, but I have not been malicious. Big difference.

Lord, no, I don’t feel like that at all. I really like humanity. Sure, I know to self protect and evil exists and try to avoid it. But, I think we all want the same things basically. When people become ‘rotten’ it’s because they’ve been kicked around too much. But I look for the good.

I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD and was feeling pretty sure that’s the cause for my ‘hysteria’, but I don’t share this feeling about humanity.

I respect your perspective TishaBuv.

I don't generalize about EVERYONE. I just think human nature is quite sad and heartbreaking.

Well, considering humanity is going to be the cause of this planet becoming uninhabitable...

I think this is what gets me the most. People want to drive. People want to constantly upgrade all their devices and tech toys. There isn't enough recycling in place.

Polar bears may soon become extinct from global warming.

To me the big picture is bleak...and so often people are inconsiderate and selfish.

But to focus on it is madness. Self-preservation dictates that I focus on the good...I guess, selfish altruism, too.

A had a meltdown while in a restaurant today, left crying. I’m so embarrassed, I don’t ever want to go back. I went from zero to 60 in a second, then was able to calm down because I had to deal with texting for a business transaction, which I was able to do. I have a hairpin trigger now, it doesn’t even feel in my control. It must be PTSD. I am hoping I can recognize that and not flip out again. I’m back and forth by the minute. I must learn to stop and control this.

Earlier you made a good observation...that misanthropy and PTSD are linked. I did my master's thesis on compassion. I found that the only way we can extend compassion to others is to first have compassion for ourselves. It sounds like you are just...upset. Anxious. So hard to remember self-care. I have been feeling the same. Let's .

I am not so sure about this DechanDawa. A person can have a great deal of compassion for others and not so much for self, too much empathy for others and not enough for self.

Then it is probably not authentic. Authentic compassion is all encompassing. That would include the self. A person without self-compassion is like a glass half empty.
