School Shooting **trigger***

Anyone else get triggered by the school shooting?

No but I sure find them all really upsetting.

No but it makes for good discussion at work. It’s a way to bond with coworkers.

Does it bother anyone else that it's a common belief that anyone with a mental illness is dangerous and should not own a firearm?

I found the whole thing very sad, but reading all the online vitriolic disagreements about how to reduce the occurrence of these vents is really getting to me right now. It just reminds me how many shallow, judgmental, idiotic adults are out there - passive aggressive, putting people down, full of their own importance, trash talking like a bunch of preteen bullies ... it's making me feel a bit nauseous.

It bothers me that there were red flags out there and that this could have been prevented.
This shooter did not "just" pop up out of no where, many of the students felt if there was ever a danger in this respect it would be "him".

I am! I am scared for my nephew because he going to my old high school that has a junior high. I know how bad that school is. I know what the teacher do in that school and how the administrator ignore the problem because of the color of his skin. I was almost was involve in a school shooting before they caught the person. I was on the list to be harm my senior year. But the law say we have to go to school. We have to send our kids to school. Or go to prison. I was in school the day of a school shooting twice one in my state and we thought it was our school because of a fired drill. No one in my school know what to do when we had a fired drill because of what happen in my freshman and sophomore year.

Yes it bother me. Although I completely understand now why they are concern. Now in my state if a person has a mental illness or has a family member who has a mental illness they can't have gun or applied for a job due to many school shooting. Even though I understand and agree with why they are doing it. On the other hand it devastating because we are blame for a mental illness that some of the doctor or law enforcement won't help us help the person who has a mental illness.

Also, the gun used was an assault rifle and there is no reason people, especially his age should be allowed to have assault rifles. This is not a hunting rifle, it's designed as an assault weapon more for military use than civilian use.

When I was that age teens NEVER had these kind of weapons/guns. There was no thought EVER about some kid/teen being a threat like this where there was any thought about acting out this way.

as someone with a severe mental illness I don't think I should have access to those type of weapons.

I am kind of weirded out that nothing about any of this has bothered me. I saw the news stories heard the debates when the TV was on and walked by and went.."Meh".

Sometimes people get a bit numbed out by bad news or experience "compassion fatigue". If it can happen to therapists and first responders at times, it can probably happen to anyone.

When I heard about the Vegas shooting............omg this is awful but I was jealous of the ones who were shot dead. I wanted to be one of them.

I think that was when I started looking to go back into therapy. I told the new T that too when they as at the first session why did I feel I need to go back into therapy.

Yes, it bothers me because it's not the whole picture, it's not 100% true and does not allow for individuality.

Yes, very triggered. Already have bad anxiety and the last two mass shootings have affected me.

I think it must have to do with my own state-of-mind because other shootings...no, not true I wasn't affected...because I was was...well, I live in Colorado.

I agree in that the age limit might be best if a bit higher, maybe 21 y.o.?
Do you know that this type of weapon is the number one choice for women for their home self-defense? Should they, as adults, be able to choose this? There are reasons they choose this gun, practical reasons.
I feel they should have the freedom to choose and to feel safe.
Just my own humble opinion.

That said, something has to be done that will truly help in stopping these horrific school/mass shootings. The answer is complicated. yet, we must get a handle on this asap.

I was somewhat bothered by thoughts about victims of this latest incident, including the likely deluded shooter who ruined many lives, including his own.

I find the public discussions grotesque. Someone going on rampage with firearms probably suffers from mental health issues, but trying to defuse the problem by barring anyone with mental health issues from access to firearms is nonsense. I suggest to rephrase the statement to shooters being human, and limiting access of humans to firearms.

Should for instance mental health issues prevent someone from running for president? Yea, maybe, but no such rule is of much help if voters can't detect them in a candidate. And if voters or the general public can't spot mental heath issues, what makes us think firearm vendors could do a better job?

Very entertaining also what Germans think about recurring mass shootings in the US. The easy access to firearms in the US is typically perceived as idiotic while the German equivalent, highways without speed limits, is just as deadly and cannot be ended because a powerful lobby, the German car industry, is against it.

I had hit a saturation point and could not watch any further, at a certain point. I want to be informed; yet, the way the media covers it is very triggering.
I try to find some type of balance in being informed and becoming overwhelmed.

I respect your opinion on this but the second amendment was written for protection not hunting. No gun kills people. People kill people. I do agree that the age should be higher, but then are we saying we send our kids to war at 18 and trust them with multi million dollar defense systems and not allow them to own a firearm on their home soil? If someone has that evil intent they will find a way to carry it out. The system failed this kid and the victims of the shooting.

I agree. My parent made sure that I was never around any of their weapon or I would be yelled at.
