I have a scheduled appt. next month for a therapist who does EMDR. I have read mixed reviews for use on CPTSD. Has anyone tried it and does it work?

I have not tried it, but I suspect it might be better for single-episode trauma.

My therapist and I pretty much ruled it out for me, stuff is too tangled up, too non declarative and too foggy (ie too complex). I guess if there are specific traumatic events it could help with those but by definition CPTSD is messier.

^^ I am in a similar situation.
I have been repeatedly advised against doing this.
Thus, I have not tried it.

Did EMDR for two years. It was the one single modality that saved my life. I am starting EMDR again as I still have some lingering issues as with complex PTSD it is hard to clear all the the trauma events. The key is having a good connection with the therapist and you feel safe with them.

This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors.

I do hope you report back; I am interested.

My therapist is going to offer this later after she trains in July.
Thanks for this!

EMDR can be very effective even on complex PTSD but because of the amount of abuse or trauma it is not a quick process. With EMDR you work on one trauma at a time preferably the oldest one first because everything else relates back to that.

I have been working with my therapist for close to a year and a half now I had all kinds of abuse physical, sexual, emotional, and neglect from the ages of 2-20. So the problem is there is so much crap to work through no matter what modality you use it's going to take a very long time. But yes EMDR can widdle it down 1 trauma at a time. You do want to be sure you have somebody highly-trained in EMDR if you using it for complex PTSD. Personally I think the success rate with using EMDR comes down to the therapist performing it they have to have all the tools and tricks to help get you through it.

I saw the EMDR therapist last week. She does think it's possible, but first I need to practice grounding and relaxation techniques before I do the actual sessions. Sounds good to me.

Looks like I'll be starting sooner than previously planned. I already know of some of the techniques T wants me to use for grounding and whatnot.

I’m in EMDR therapy now. We are tackling things that are more recent that are interfering with functioning now (my preference) and selecting things that come up as we go through it.

The triggering person has been traveling, so I’m not sure yet if it is working. I’m responsive, which is promising.

I have recently changed therapists in order to try EMDR therapy. The problem we are having is choosing a more stabile time to start. While I'm homeless is not an ideal time to start. On the other hand, the homelessness is not likely to change any time soon while i await the disability process. Key note is that I do TRUST my new therapist and he is very willing to work with me.

Had my first EMDR session today. Went pretty well actually. Therapist said to choose a memory that I first developed trauma from. She used two paddles that vibrated a pattern while I was reliving that memory. It was interesting that all the work I did with my previous T came into play and it helped. I will email her tomorrow for check-in and see her next week for post-treatment processing before I tackle the next one.

One of the things she mentioned was that sometimes other memories may be brought up, so I'll be looking out for that.

Thanks so much for sharing about your experience.

My current pdoc thinks EMDR is a potentially very powerful treatment modality.

Second session today. Memory was harder to deal with. I did figure something out and it was kind of funny, but it helped.

This may take me a few weeks to process it because it was more reactive. (Originally this would cause me to want to throw up, so yeah it was difficult.)

Follow up went okay. May do a more recent memory next time. I'll talk to T about it.
