For those of us who don't feel very good about ourselves, as someone once said, in our lives there has been "no one for the defense." So we literally don't know how to support ourselves, comfort ourselves, or be good to ourselves. Certainly this is true for me. I want to, but I just don't know how.

A therapist once gave me a suggestion that sometimes works for me, which when I'm really upset is to close my eyes, sit down, feel the upset, and imagine as well as you can a very loving person putting their arms around you and comforting you, not with words, but just by being there with you. Imagine your upset gradually calming as a result. You may have to imagine this person if you haven't had anybody like this in your life.

Keep at it until you can feel the upset begin to decrease, even if it's just a little.
