I've been looking into Albert Ellis, one of the creators of cognitive behavioral therapy. He argued that shame and guilt are never positive, and suggested that people go ahead and do things that they normally might not, because of a fear of embarrassment.

One example was to ride a subway, and just shout out the stops. He never advocated breaking any laws, doing anything immoral, or hurting anyone, but he did challenge people to push their limits, and understand that there is no need for shame or guilt.

Ever tried it? I remember doing some embarrassing things when I was still in high school, just to prove I could... but, it's been a long time.

I do somethings think about the times I did feel embarrassed, and give myself a little talk, just to remind myself that I didn't do anything that I should be ashamed of, or have any reason to feel guilty.

There is a lot of Ellis material on youtube.

That's one of the things I love about acting. You get to go over the top.

I teach high school. I embarrass myself every day without trying lol I am tune deaf but attempt to sing in front of kids lol I do embarrassing dance moves at events and for no reason, I say dumb stuff all the time, i make fun of my cluttered desk and my distractibility lol . It makes my kids relaxed as they embarrass themselves too and it helps to see how I don't make a big deal out of it

Ellis is an amazing guy, and makes a lot of sense.

This is really thought provoking, I'm kind of reserved and a little shy so don't like drawing attention to myself.

However I do use myself therapeutically when communicating with clients (cognitively impaired), if I make a mistake I'll play it up and make fun with it. It relaxes people and helps them engage.

It looks like I'll be volunteering at the local recycle center. That might be a little embarrassing. I anticipate some taunts.
