I have been wanting to travel somewhere exotic for a while now and I finally booked a last minute trip this week. I basically intend on joining one of my friends in one country for a couple days when he is there, then going to a nearby country for an additional week. I was so excited for this, but now after booking it and telling everyone I am going, I find myself feeling nervous and depressed. Part of it is that in the second country I am visiting, I will be alone and I wish I had someone to share the experience with. I am also afraid of flying and afraid I won't be able to get around in these countries. I just don't feel motivated at all anymore. But I already booked the tickets and told everyone I was going, I would feel so horrible about canceling the whole thing. I am so depressed I feel like crying basically. I seem to have just lost interest in everything. I don't know what is wrong with me.

I predict you will feel better once you start on your trip. Try not to worry, but enjoy the experience and have some fun.

Is stress known to cause depression like this?
I am really hoping that I get back to normal before I leave. |

It can, both work together. Fear is at play. I say do the adventure, do not get down on yourself because you are doing parts of it alone.

I don't know what is wrong with me. Just a week ago I was obsessed with the idea of traveling and couldn't even decide where I wanted to go. Now I just find myself totally uninterested and unmotivated. Things that would have made me jump with excitement a few days ago now seem totally pointless. I hate this.

That's ok. If you feel scared of flying and getting around, that is by far enough to make you feel stressed out and depressed. More so when alone because there isn't anyone to navigate any challenges with you.
I've actually learned that I prefer travelling alone! It will hopefully be different if I ever travel with a partner though. Are you staying in a hostel or a hostel? There's nearly always people travelling alone and/or people willing to include more people at hostels. I've definitely gone to places while I travelled with people I'd just met! It can seem intimidating and like everyone is there with friends, but it's not likely the case. Research the crap out of the area, what have other tourists recommended? The more you know going in, the safer you will feel. What countries are you going to?

Is this the first time you have travelled alone? If so it could just be a fear of the unknown that is triggering you.
If you have someone you can plan to update with your journey (family or friend) as you go that could be one way of sharing the experience. If you use facebook or Instagram you could update followers with photos of the sites. That way you'll be connected and not totally alone. |

This happens to me too. I am leaving tomorrow...
Even fun trips get me down and I would do ANYTHING to stay home in bed....I feel for you. If you are prepared, you will be alright. Make sure your phone will work (don't know where you're going) and tell your bank and cc's where you will be. You're never totally alone with the interwebs... |

I love travelling alone. This means you get to do what you want to do without making an concessions to someone else's lame wishes. I have generally, with the exception of Paris, been treated like royalty when I've been on my own. You will have fun.
As for the flying. Gee I have difficulty with that. But, I visited my pdoc and he prescribed me a tranquilizer to take (ativan maybe?). I informed the flight attendants and they were good enough to look after me quite well. Great luck! aurevoir et bon voyage! |

Thanks for all the supportive comments. I ended up going and just got back a couple days ago. I am so glad I went. I enjoyed it a lot. I really did enjoy the part where I was by myself too. In some ways it was better than traveling with someone else. Don't know what was going on with me before I left, but I am so glad I didn't end up canceling it.

Good work, adventure will always have some anxiety with it. That what make it an adventure!
