I've been feeling an overwhelming sense of sadness and grief for no reason. I just want to crawl inside my bed and not come out, but I don't have that luxury, I have to take care of my family and have to go to work. Everything feels like an immense effort except crying, I can just cry all the time. I'm trapped in this feeling for over a week. How do I deal?

Hello Smiles007: I'm sorry you are trapped in this sadness & grief. I do think this becomes a problem for many people this time of year. I don't know where you live, what your weather is like, or what your traditions are. But where I live, it's cold, the days are short, there's little or no sun, & most people are frantically running around preparing for Christmas. (That's not me.) Anyway, it's kind-of a prescription for sadness & grief in a lot of ways. The holiday season also can often stir difficult memories as well.

Of course the obvious answer here is therapy. And then, of course, there are things like getting enough sunlight (natural if possible... artificial if not.) Exercise & eat healthily. Many people swear by various dietary supplements. I don't take any. But many people do. I'm also a member of PsychCentral's sister website: "NeuroTalk". And there are many members there who are very knowledgeable with regard to dietary supplements & who place great value on them.

These are all pretty mundane suggestions I'm afraid... nothing you haven't heard many times I would imagine. The thing is there really are no secret remedies for what you're experiencing, at least not that I'm aware of. One simply has to try a bunch of different things & see what helps. And if none of it does, then there are antidepressant medications one can take in an effort to boost one's mood. Finding the right antidepressant for you can be tricky though. Everyone seems to respond differently to them. So, if possible, I think it's best to try the other stuff first. At least that's my personal opinion. I send you my best wishes...

If this is the way you feel all the time, then see a Therapist. If this is just recent, look at your situation. Look for stress and change in your situation, that could have triggered this feeling.

I am wondering if there is a specific trigger(s) to this. Perhaps if you were to find a way to head off or deal with the trigger you might feel better.

If this persists I encourage you to seek some help. Maybe your family doctor is a good place to start.
