hey guys,
so my sleeping pattern is messed up. it started gradually and as my mood has gone down my sleeping has increased but at really annoying times.
lately an average night for me is falling asleep anywhere between 3-5AM and waking up between 1-3PM i hate it!!!

i was perscribed a mild anti-depressant before by my doc to only take at night to help me sleep when i needed it, however the doc is on vacation at the moment!(GREAT TIMING!) i'm at the point i want to look for something over the counter. thoughts?

It's frustrating when you aren't getting good sleep. If I get too little over the course of a couple of days, I start to get panicky.

Having been on anti-depressants for over half my life, I have stayed away from OTC sleep aids. I am on Ambien and need it most nights to sleep.

There are things you can do to help you sleep. Do something relaxing before bed. Like a bath or reading. Try to stay away from the TV or computer as they can be too stimulating, even if they don't seem like it. Try not to nap during the day, but if you do, don't nap in your bed and try to get up after a half hour or so. See if guided meditation or stress reduction excercises help. Make sure your room is dark and as free from noise as possible.

I get where you are though. When I get overwhelmed or overstimulated, I "shut down". Well, I learned how to "shut down" watching my dad as I grew up. It means sleeping, a lot. So I am still dealing with it.

Talk to your doctor when they get back. I know it's hard to wait, but they will have safe suggestions and alternatives for you!

If you aren't on any medication that would cause problems with it, I would use otc sleep aid until you can see your doc. I've used them with my antidepressant (zoloft) before. Now I have prescribed sleep meds. I hope you get back to a better sleeping pattern soon!

You should check with any meds you're taking no matter what you take but here's a product that really helps me when I need to get to bed:

MidNite.
It's an herbal supplement that you can take at any time of night. Mine is chewable and very fast acting. It has Melatonin in it, as well as Lemon Balm, Chamomile, and Lavender. Melatonin is what makes you sleepy

Putting a link here to amazon with it, though I dunno if that's the best way to buy it - I got it at CVS and just one box - I figured seeing the box and info might help =)

You need to know this information:

Melatonin is a hormone. It does induce sleep. However, since it's a hormone, you do not want to take it often or it will offset your body's own melatonin production and it will be out of whack.

OTC sleep aids: The main ingredient in OTC sleep aids is an antihistamine. You could take Benadryl and get the same effect. They are OK for occasional use. But if you use them on consistent nights, they will eventually have the opposite effect and keep you awake.

Either of these are OK for inconsistent use.

hm, yes I've heard amazing things about valerian root - I've been meaning to try some for a while. Now might be a good time, I'm trying to change my sleep schedule

so the doc prescribed melatonin to fix the sleeping. and we upped my medication dose. and as much as i usually feel like a failure when upping my meds, this time, i'm just relieved. an end. an end to it. get my life back to normal. feel normal again.

Ok so I'm going to recommend something besides pills because it helps me so perhaps it will help you too.

When I need it I make a cup of Sleepytime or Sleepytime Extra tea (Celestial Seasonings) and it usually relaxes me enough so I can fall asleep though lately it's not been working as well as it once did. The Extra actually has Valerian root which does help a lot of people get sleep.

Maybe trying that will help.
