My husband will be a brand new certified teacher this summer, after changing careers in his 50's. The state we live in just announced that all school districts will be laying off teachers and doing no hiring. We are living on our savings which will run out by the end of the year. He has already started to look for a teaching position in other states, but all states are facing budget cuts due to the bad economy.
I am paralyzed with fear. I have been homeless before and do not want to go through that again. I am working very hard at living in the moment, that is keeping me barely functioning right now. Getting out of bed is an effort, taking a shower is an effort, cleaning and cooking is a huge effort. My pdoc has hiked up my med dose and it's helped some what. I'm afraid we will lose our home and be forced to give up my grrrls (my two dogs). I really wish I could just fall asleep and not wake up.

Yes I am. But it not nearly enough to even pay rent on an apartment, let alone anything else. Also we are right now paying as much for Cobra health insurance as we are for our mortgage. I have medicare, but my husband who is diabetic would have no health insurance.

Won't pretend...this is exceptionally distressing news. Can't bear the thought of you being in this situation, of you having to part with the grrrls. No.

Hey, it may not be what you are looking for, but Mississippi (where I live) is in DIRE need of teachers and is considered a critical needs state because of the lack of adequate teachers here. There are many, many school districts that can never find enough teachers to fill their classrooms and kids end up being forced into classes with 30 or so students. I know that many school districts will even pay back a percentage of any student loans you have for each year you work within the district. I will be honest, MS is a poor state. The teachers don't get paid great, but there are a lot of jobs in teaching here and the cost of living is really low.

Hi Pom - Have your husband ask his school if they know if anyone is hiring. A lot of times schools with keep in touch with colleges when they need a teacher. Please, don't give up...
The state we live in says one thing but does another. Your husband should try private schools, too. I wish you both the best! Please keep us posted!!

Pomegranate, I feel for you at this tough time. Folks here have made some good suggestions and there is certainly hope. Use the internet as much as you can to explore possibilities. Does he have special skills or subject areas that school boards could be looking for?
Years ago we ended up moving for job reasons, and we love it here. Thinking of you and sending warm wishes your way. |

Pomegranate,
I am sorry you are going through this right now. If you are struggling with your mortgage, call 888-995-HOPE. I am a counselor at one of the agencies that takes these calls. You can speak with a financial counselor to help you come up with a plan. They can also refer you to some other non-profits for other services you may be eligible for. I hope things start to look up for you ![]() |

This may just be the opportunity you need to make some huge changes in your life & see everything in a new light along with your husband being able to make a huge difference in children's lives where they are desperately in need. Just have to be open to all possibilities in economic times like this. The number of choices are few, but the choices that are there are the important ones that are really in need. Just takes more searching & planning, but sounds like great opportunities are there. If you can refi your house & rent it out until the market goes up & makes that more saleable, then you can move to where housing costs less also.
Sounds to me like this may end up being a wonderful opportunity rather than a disaster. Best wishes, Debbie

You might Texas, also, as they were very short of teachers a couple of years ago. They were also paying a percentage of college fees but you had to stay at that school for a prearranged amount of time.
