i have clinical depression. i've seen psychiatrist(s), counsellor(s) taken antidepressants, i've done everything and it doesnt ever go away or get better. i've been looking into ECT recently. do you know whether this might help or how it might help? because the usual info. on it doesnt seem to tell me how it actually works. or whether it definately works. thanks

Yes.

There is actually a professional Journal of ECT. You can browse summaries of 25 years of articles.

I know little of ECT; I've never had it. My layman's impression of ECT is that even the experts and practitioners are still uncertain of the treatment's mechanism(s) of action. In other words, they know it works with a certain percentage of persons (I don't know how large a percentage), but they don't know why.

Search PsychCentral. I'm sure I've seen posts praising the procedure and its effects.

I agree with Rohag. I am not very knowledgable about it but what I do know is it's an extreme treatment, not fully understood, and although it helps some people has some icky side effects as well. For that reason it is not used at first, however if you've been trying other treatments for a while it may be a good thing to look into.

consult the articles here on PC (the main website) and search around google for reputable sources of information. Also, consider talking to your therapist/psychiatrist to get more information and find out if it's right for you

wishing you the best =)
