I am sorry you are feeling so bad right now. Can you share a little more about what's got you down? Maybe we can help! Sending you a safe hug!

Beth,

No - it is not selfish!!! Depression can be so overwhelming and color everything in your life. Trying to save yourself may be all you have energy for right now. My therapist used to tell me this story about being on a plane with my small kids. If the plane is going down, do you reach for your own oxygen mask or help the kids first? You have to put the mask on yourself first, to be sure that you are strong enough to help the kids. This sounds like one of those cases.

However, if your friend is also depressed, you might find that you could boost each other by sharing and commiserating...or even finding some things that make you both feel better and motivating each other to go do them.
Thanks for this!

If crying made things better, I think all of us would be 100% healthy and happy! It is to bad that it doesn't. I'm sorry you're hurting. I'm sorry you have a friend that is hurting, too. It isn't selfish of you to put your own needs first, especially when you are undergoing intense stress & pressure.

Thank you for the support. I feel like I can barely function without additional stress. At the same time I don't want to lose my friendship.

I am so torn. I am trying to perform like normal and it is hard enough to go through the motions of life by myself. I wish I could step out of myself for a moment and be this incredibly strong person.

Depression is a very hard thing to live with. You shouldn't feel torn...if you don't take care of yourself first, then how can you be there for your friends when they need you?

You are right, tangodream. It is difficult to put aside guilty feelings, though.
