Ok, I know this should probably go in the smoking cessation forum...but I had to put it here. So many people with mental health issues smoke, but many (like me) won't even talk about quitting or read about quitting. It's almost impossible when you add depression into the mix.
Anyhow here's the deal, I purchased an ecig a couple weeks ago. When I first heard about this thing, I thought "what a stupid idea". But after a little research, I decided to try it. WOW, what a huge difference from using patches, pills or gum. It really works well! Grant it, I am still getting nicotine...and "pretending" to smoke, but it isn't toxic, and there's no 2nd hand smoke, and it doesn't smell...all huge pluses! And it's fine, a bit of an adjustment, but nothing like quitting. Very easy. Just a positive shout out for depressed smokers!

Great! Thanks for sharing! I'm not a smoker, but I certainly know about how many folks with "mental issues" self-medicate with smoking. It's driving them even crazier that lots of mental wards no longer allow smoking. What, then, is an "ecig"? Maybe they would allow them in hospitals.....Thanks.

It's an electronic cigarette. It's shaped like a cig, has a rechargeable battery that heats up liquid nicotine. This causes a vapor that is similar to smoke when you take a drag off the end. You can get the liquid in many different flavors and many different strengths including a no-nicotine. There are a million different brands/models on the market. It's called "vaping" instead of smoking, since you're inhaling vapor instead of smoke. Not sure if they'd be allowed in psych wards, but I know you can use them in restaurants, stores, etc.

In depression . . . faith in deliverance, in ultimate restoration, is absent. The pain is unrelenting, and what makes the condition intolerable is the...feeling felt as truth...that no remedy will come -- not in a day, an hour, a month, or a minute. . . . It is hopelessness even more than pain that crushes the soul.-William Styron |

Congrats on taking a step to improve your health! Nicotine itself is still bad for your heart, but by vaping instead of smoking you're protecting yourself from lung diseases like emphysema and lung cancer. Thanks for sharing too!

I gave up smoking during the worst of my depressions and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I am glad you found something to help you.
