I was at the gym - got brave and decided to go on the treadmill - a guy two machines over said: "You're not going to use that are you?" I, quite literally, lept off of the machine, (leaping a foot & 1/2 backwards), and said, (I kid you not): "No, not if you don't want me to!"

I think it's fair to say that my self-esteem is still a bit on the squashed side, ('duh, ya think, Peanut?')...

I would laugh, except that it was so pathetic...

I think the Peanut needs a little help re-inventing herself...

Thanks for any input you might offer... In need of a Peanut revamping...

Ah, Peanut, {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}} I would have done the exact same thing and not thought anything of it. You at least recognized what you did. Maybe somebody will have some suggestions.

My answer would have been pretty close to yours as" Oh no, you can use it" Then I would have probably left. Ok so I guess I'm not helping here.
I think you are doing good by just going there. You are on the right track.

Dear Peanut....

I think, unless that fellow was planning to use that machine himself and you cut in line before him or something...he had no right to say anything! You have just as much right to use any machine as anyone else. Everyone at a health club is there to improve their health and to work on fitness. I hope if that should happen again, you might try saying "Yes, I am, " and go ahead and use the treadmill. I know that's hard...but...you have just as much reason to use the machines as that guy does! If he has a problem with it, that is his problem and not yours.

(((((Peanut))))) I am so sorry that happened to you. I know that must have been very upsetting.

Hugs if okay,
ErinBear

Peanut, some possible comebacks...

"No, I'm going to ride it across the to McDonalds for a Big Mac and fries. Can I get you something?"

"Why, can you only ride the one that goes at lower speeds?"

"A treadmill??? No wonder I wasn't getting anywhere!"

Seriously though, I can see myself getting off and offering it to the guy. I'm doing a lot better with confrontation these days though. As hard as it is, it really only takes one time of standing your ground and it begins to get easier. I think you have a kind and charming personality, and that can be very disarming in a confrontation. It really is one of your strengths, use it to your advantage if you can.

Good luck dear Peanut!

Poor Peanut - that guy was a bad man!

Just out of curiosity -- what was his response when you jumped off? I'm just wondering why he said that -- maybe that machine is notoriously broken all the time? Or maybe (and this is the most likely!) he thought you were cute and was trying to make conversation?

I'd probably conclude the latter, dear Peanut!

Your friend,
LMo

We are ALL going to be a-ok!

{{{{{{{{{{{{Jillers}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Know what I would have done? Pointed to the brand of the machine and asked him if that was his name! hehehee More likely, he wanted to make conversation with you. Ooops! In need of a Peanut revamping...

Jill, so proud of you for going to the gym and then to run into someone like that. I can understand your response though.

You are not pathetic.....just not used to defending yourself out in there yet. Give yourself time and stay focused. I think you are doing so well.

How weird. In need of a Peanut revamping...

My first reaction is to think that the man is an idiot. But it could have been his attempt at chatting to you - he spotted your charm!!! My reaction would have been to go bright red and try to ignore him. But jumping off the machine is probably a better idea In need of a Peanut revamping... I hate gyms, wild horses wouldn't drag me to one, and I think you are doing great by going there!!!!

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{Peanut}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Take care,
Fuzzy

Thank you so much for your reply, (((((((((Wendy))))))))))... You know, I was really quite shocked when this happened, because it reminded me of how I was in the first grade = I would jump off of the merry-go-round if I saw another kid even walking toward it, thinking that they should have it instead... This was something different than that though... it was me being VERY conflict averse... something I have not been, (though I am more of a mediator type,...), in a long while ... It worries me because I can't return to my current occupation if I am excessively so... [sigh]...

Thank you, (((((((((((((((Never Forgotten)))))))))))))))... I'm still surprised by how automatic my reaction was... I would've rather made a conscious choice... [Aw welll...]... You're a sweetie, my friend!!! In need of a Peanut revamping...

Hi ((((((((((Erin)))))))))))): Yes, I agree with you... It turns out that the man was just wanting to tell me that he had changed machines because the one I was about to get on was making a very loud noice... A reaction by me somewhere in the middle would have been the best... In need of a Peanut revamping...

Your post made me laugh Mary Alice. I think we'd make a good butt kickin team. Lots of pent up anger, huh?
