Hi Dias:
This is an interesting post - thank you for sharing it with us. Being the School Guardian is a LOT of responsibility, especially for being 16! That means that there are 17 and 18, even 19 year olds that you are supposed to watch out for. I'm not sure that it's completely fair of your teachers to expect that out of you, AND expect you to get good grades. Especially if you're not getting paid! So first, who is your manager? There must be one teacher or a counselor or a principal who is your manager, otherwise they couldn't really demote you, right? So the first step is that you must figure out who your manager is. With any real job, there is a written list of responsibilities and expectations. Did they give you a list for being School Guardian? Because, they really might NOT expect you to watch out for all 400 of the other people - maybe only just SOME of them. If they didn't give you a list, then your next step is to talk to your manager, and ask them to write a list of your responsibilities. If they can't write a list, then guess what? They can't demote you, because they never put their expectations of you in writing! But, they can't promote you very easily, either, and you'll have no real way of knowing whether they think you're doing a good job or not. So, the second step is to make sure you have a list of responsibilities. Third step is to schedule a peformance review with your manager. The performance review is when your manager compares how well you've done as School Guardian with what their expectations are, as listed in your job responsibilities. You need this performance review! One reason is so that you can have feedback about the areas in which you are doing well, but also so that you know where you need to improve. But just as important, if you ever want to apply for another type of security job and use your job as the School Guardian of the whole school, you will need either a letter of recommendation from your manager, or at least your performance review, to prove that you did a good job. So, the last step is to schedule an appointment with your manager for your performance review. What do you think? Your friend, LMo We are ALL going to be a-ok!

... and one more thing, Dias... if your manager doesn't admit to being your manager, or doesn't want to write your list of responsibilities, or refuses to give you a performance review...
...then quit! If they expect you to take on this responsibility, then THEY have a responsibility to YOU as well. And if they don't appreciate the work you're doing, then you might as well look for a job with someone who does -- and who pays you, too! We are ALL going to be a-ok!

I think Lmo had really great ideas.

Do you have a team to help you or are you expected to police 400 rowdy kids on your own?
Could you be assertive (not aggressive) to the administration? Explain the job is big for anyone to handle, ask for some help? Empower yourself administratively. If they expect you to do the job, tell them what you need to do it. They may not give you everything you ask, but might meet you halfway. If nothing else, it might cause them to re-evaluate what they've asked you to do. No one can be expected to perform any job with insufficient tools. Can you imagine a carpenter attempting to build a house without hammer or nails? If you can, make a list of what things would let you do the job more efficiently. Maybe extra people is one, but policies might be another way of getting more done with less work. Maybe your hands are tied in some ways. Is there any equipment you could use? Walkie talkies or cell phones, handcuffs, stun guns, bazookas ![]() What a difficult job that must be. Some of todays kids seem so out of control, but, I grew up in a rural town, so it was much different there, not neccessarily then. Glad to know you're one of the good guys. It's never easy to do a good job. It's easiest to do nothing. You're trying, give yourself credit. A lot of adults get fed up with beaurocracy too. Be proactive. If they ask for more, tell them what you need. Then it's in their hands. Negotiate a middle ground this time. Next time, after you've used what they've given as new tools (assumingthey will), ask for a little more. When they see what they give brings results they desire, they'll be more likely to offer you and those who follow in your steps, the things you need to do the job they want. John Elway, Joe Montana, Brett Favre all had challenges too. We don't hear much about the times they felt overwhelmed because the receptions outnumber the interceptions. It wasn't magic that they succeeded. They trained, negotiated with coaches, developed relationships with team-mates, etc... they were great, but they didn't do it alone by any means. Some great qb's didn't get support and we've never heard about them. Your administration has a responsibility to you equal to the responsibility you have to them. Without a "bad attitude", explain what you need. If it's not provided they shouldn't be shocked they don't get the results they want. And you shouldn't be either. If you have been given or volunteered for an impossible job, it might be best to simply explain what have told us and resign. The bottom line in school is education and the diploma to prove it. Don't put that in jeopardy by going for impossible brownie points.
Wherever you go, there you are

That was a good idea Dias. It's good to have someone to share the responsibility with and also someone to back you up if you need it.
I think you did a smart thing making the suggestion to the Principle and hopefully you and him can work something out that will make the school better for everyone :O) Heidu The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it. John Ruskin

good luck.
i hope you can mangae to work it all out. I have did a job like this in school, but I was over younger kids not older one.s I had two other people help me out, and I also had teachers I could go to if someone really got out of hand. You are doing a job that no Kid should have to do on his or her own.. Keep it up, we need more good role models in high school and junior high. you are doing a great thing but you also know you need help.
