I'm new here, though I'm an old lurker. So hi It's all a bit much for me at the moment. I'm at university but I have stopped working, I'm so worried I'm going to mess up my degree, and I got a poor result on my assignment today which made me feel bad. I can't concentrate on anything. I started anti-depressants but they haven't done a lot yet. I see a therapist and he is trying to work me out some long-term therapy. He said he'd mail me about it this week, but he hasn't. I feel let down. And then I feel silly about wanting him to mail me so badly. I think about him all the time, it makes me so sad that he doesn't love me. I hurt myself sometimes.

I don't know what I'm asking really, I'm just overwhelmed. I don't even know where to begin fixing this.
Thanks for this!

Hi Elley. Can you think of any little thing that you, you yourself, can do, right now, other than waiting for your therapist's letter that would make you feel a tiny bit better? A good thing? Not hurting but nurturing. Look at yourself, you're are so sad, have a heart, do something nice for this sad, lonely, so vulnerable girl.
Thanks for this!

So sorry you are having trouble, Elley! You might try reading Burns, "Feeling Good Handbook" and working through the exercises. It was recommended to me by a psychiatrist I saw when hospitalized.

Can you email T and remind him/her of their promise to write to you and see what's going on?

Hugs to you!

Hi Elley. Sorry you're in such a bad place. I've been struggling with university and depression for over three years now so I understand what you're going through in that regard. If you find your depression interfering too much with your courses it might be worth talking to someone, either your professors or someone at student services in order to let them know what's going on. I did it and they give me a little leeway with my courses and assignments sometimes when I need it, and it's been incredibly helpful. Anyway, just a suggestion. Sending good vibes your way.

Hi Elley -- Unfortunately, it seems most antidepressants take a few weeks to work, which I think is a tremendous irony. Those of us suffering from depression need help NOW, not in 4 to 6 weeks. Also, and I'm parroting my shrinks here, oftentimes people have to try more than one antidepressant before finding the one that works for them. I myself have tried Celexa, Prozac, and Effexor. So please hang in there.

Cake sounds good, BTW!

You know, I really hope in the future that it wont be like this. That those of us suffering from depression wont have to wait several weeks for a medication to kick in, that we wont have to switch medications and dosages time after time to get the right "fix".

Psychiatry needs to advance to reduce our suffering and cure us in a more effective and timely manner.

However, until that time, this is the system that is available and we have to work through it.
