Hi everyone,
So this is my first time posting in a forum or a group, I've thought about it and visited some websites but I never actually decided to join one until now. I just need feedback from people who really know how I feel (depression). I've been afraid to join a group like this because the people I've opened up to- my boyfriend and several close friends- say that they know how I feel and that it happens to everyone sometimes or that it's normal. I start to believe them, but then it doesn't go away and I start to feel like I'm losing my mind. Basically, I've been dealing with it for several years and I'm a little confused about the origin of my problems because it really kicked in when I had a bad trip on LSD a little over two years ago. I was, however, diagnosed with depression in high school. I keep telling myself that I can fix whatever is wrong, but I'm worried that I'll be like this for the rest of my life. And I don't think I can do that. I don't know how to explain it to the people who are close to me and I guess I have my own stigmas to deal with because I grew up in a community that didn't believe in going to the doctor to get treated for mental illness. You were just supposed to work through your problems. I guess therapy would be the next step- so I guess what I'm asking for here is feedback on my situation and also- what does therapy entail? Hi Kimchi and WELCOME ~ I'm glad you found us, but I'm sorry you need us.
You will find alot of people who suffer from depression. Many just don't like to talk about it. I've been depressed since I was a child. I've been taking antidepressants for about the last 20 years. Thank goodness they work!!! The first time I decided to get help, I talked to my medical doctor, and he referred me to a psychiatrist ~ I was QUITE ill at that time and needed to go inpatient. Since then my latest therapist was a psychologist and I got more out of seeing her than anyone. I believe psychologists are more apt to give you feedback, and participate in the conversation instead of just sitting there and nodding while you talk. LOL When you go to therapy, the initial visit is usually a question & answer session. The therapist tries to get you to open up so he/she can get to know you and get an idea of what the "general" problem is. Talk to your doctor and see who he/she would recommend. You do NOT have to suffer like this any longer. Depression can be a serious condition, and the sooner you get it taken care of the better. Here's a link to PsychCentral's Depression Guide by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. If you scroll down, you'll find a substantial "Diagnosis & Treatment" section. Resources there can lead you through potential treatment options including therapy, meds, and self-help. People who have not themselves experienced depression frequently have trouble relating to depressives. What we experience -- and there's a range of depressive experiences -- is difficult to convey to the healthy. May you have a supportive experience here!
