Hi all...I was in the hospital for severe Sui depression at the end of March. I talked to work and took a 6 month leave and have decided that I need to extend it but I'm afraid to go in and do it tomorrow. I'm so afraid they will be mad at me...but I am still not functioning very well as at least once a week I crash and think clearly or do much. I gotta go and talk to them...I'm just scared. How do I do this????

Have you been at the job long? Have you had any problems or write ups at work? I would think if you've been there awhile and aren't a problem then they would respect you for your choice of wanting to function at optimal level before returning. And if I were you I'd put something in there like that. That you don't feel like you are up to par yet and if they are paying you, you want to do well for them. (turning it to make it be about the company is always a good idea because to employers, it is.) I'd also let them know (if you know) a date when you will be returning as well as a plan to what you will be doing during that time off to improve bring yourself to where you are able to work again.
Just my two cents. I've considered asking for FMLA and short term disabilty before to go away and get some treatment, but so far I haven't. Partly because I'm scared to do so and partly because I really can't afford it. So take it with a grain of salt.

If you are out on FMLA and your doctor hasn't released you to return to work, that should take care of it.

Yes, your doctor should be in control here and should extend your leave if you're not ready to go back. That's the way it is done at most larger businesses. If you are in a small mom-pop-type operation, it might be different. And the others are right--they won't want you back if you are unable to function normally. They want to know they can count on you, whatever your job is. And leaves happen, and are extended all the time. It's a big deal for you, maybe your first, but happens all the time with employers. Leaves for pregnancy, berievement, illness, surgery, lots of things. Now even dads can take time off for new babies!

I agree, if your work has a problem with it-- and SELF CARE IS the most important, a note from your Dr. should take care of it, and maybe even give you disability pay, or at the least FMLA.
Good luck!

Oh, and if there's someone in HR you think might be more understanding, or someone you have dealt with before, I would talk to them. Someone who knows you might be more empathetic.

Technically I'm a contingent employee. My mom told me that technically they can't really say no. So if they won't give it to me I'm quitting. There is no HR that I'm aware of...and if there is obviously I know no one. I found another company I want to apply to anyway where I would get full time and benefits. So I guess I will find out soon.

They extended it no problem....need note to go back. As of the recent extension yesterday set to go back June 6. Hopefully Pdoc will write the note when I see her on the 24th of this month.
