I was just curious if sleeping or wanting to go to sleep is a form of dissociation.
I often just go to bed if things get too much for me or if I want to avoid something, etc. I could sleep all day sometimes! It's an escape, so could this be dissociation? Thanks in advance!! |

hi meoww.. welcome to the forum! I'm not sure if this is dissociation or not. I do the same tho. I try to go to bed when im really depressed...even if its really early. I feel like better to sleep than to be sad.

When I get depressed I tend to sleep alot. My T says its an ok thing because its better than the alternatives for me. I feel better knowing that.

Maybe a form of avoidance too?

I think it might be a form of wanted emotional/mental escape whatever it is. I've always done that myself...it's a safe escape even if only for a little while.
Be safe, KD

Welcome to pc meowrr! I agree it's depression, not dissociation... if you were to be doing something and then wake up to find yourself having been sleeping and you lost track of time.. that might be dissociation...

not as far as I know. dissociation is thinking about other things then what is physically going on in the moment.
People with Dissociative Identity Disorder sometimes discribes their loss of time as they fell asleep because on minute they are thinking of ways to relax themselves to get away from whatever is physically happening and the next they become aware that physically time has passed and the one thing that everyone can relate to is going to bed at night and going to sleep, and waking up its a new day. so its easier to explain switching memory pieces (personalities) is like going to sleep. Going to sleep literally when a person is overwhelmed is a symptom of depression and sometimes other disorders both physical and mental so you might want to see your medical doctor to rule out physical problems and also let your therapist (if you have one) know this is happening. |

Thanks everyone. I agree.. it is more of an avoidance thing.
![]() I've always had trouble falling asleep ever since childhood. I've never been diagnosed with anything like chronic fatigue syndrome, but I am almost always tired and have to take a nap during the day. I've had my blood and thyroid, etc. checked and they're ok, but I haven't had a sleep test done yet (my husband has, and I know I'd just stay up the whole time.. LOL!!!). Anyway, thank you for your input!! |
