This is a question I ask myself often, and even more so as of late. Recently I read an article on depression that said most people who don't have depression are relatively happy or at least content most of the time. This absolutely blew my mind. That made me think that I've had depression for most of my life, even during my childhood, as I was prone to unprovoked sadness even then. I don't know, it's hard to say looking back as I can't be present and feel how I felt then. Anyone else think about this stuff?

I wonder sometimes about that. I know my depression/anxiety goes back to at least the age of 14. However, there are little bits of things I remember from being younger that makes me think it went back much further than that, maybe even back to the age of 8 or 9. And truthfully my memory is bad enough that I really will never know for sure. I recently had a change in perception about my depression. I had thought for most of my adult life (I'm 42 now) that my depression was brought on by family situations and such (environment). Now I believe that most likely my depression was going to be there no matter what and that my family dynamics just kind of intensified the experience. So yeah, I guess I do think about that stuff. Thanks for posting this.

Yeah, I get what you're saying about depression and your environment. For me it was nostalgia. I am prone to romanticize the past, and thinking about "happier times" has always triggered depression in me pretty bad, even when those "happier times" probably weren't happier at all. I recently made the decision to live more in the present, and got rid of a bunch of my old belongings I was hanging onto. Of course I'm still depressed as the problem is biological, but I do think living in the past made my depression worse. I'm also in my early 20's, so there's not much past to live in haha.
