Has anyone noticed their depression get better by removing sugar from their diet? I'm willing to try anything since I'm starting my third AD since the other two haven't worked and I'm in a major depression. Thank you

Hello, Livebythesea!
Removing sugar from my diet has not brought me any relief from depression. That's my personal experience. Oddly, several years ago I lost most of my taste for sweets/sugar (even most fruit). The doctors tell me it's probably a medication side effect.

Thank you for your response. If I lost my taste for sweets that would be great

i find that sugar can increase mood swings, and things, but i dont think that it by itself will be enough to end depression...

I don't think sugar or lack thereof has any bearing on depressive moods. MSG will though and since it has a bunch of names nobody ever knows that they are eating the stuff. You have to be really careful and watch the food additives if you want to try and eliminate that stuff.

I eat or drink very little that has sugar, and I am still depressed more often than not. I just don't like alot of sweets. When I buy sodas, I get diet. Cappuccino that has no sugar. I make tea it has less than half a cup per gallon. I don't like cakes, cookies, donuts or anything sweers like that.

I believe some people are 'sugar sensitive' - you may like to check out this site 'Radiant Recovery' - it has a lot of scientific evidence to show 'some' people are. http://www.radiantrecovery.com/sensitive.htm

In my case every since I stopped my anti depressants about seven months ago, my mouth tastes like sweet, like as if I had just had a candy or any sweet related confetti.

I've noticed when I eat bad I tend to feel bad, but that's connected to all sorts of junk. I've pondered giving up sugar, but it never quite works. There is a book called "Potatoes Not Prozac" that talks about sugar/carbs in connection to depression. It's a quick, easy read and I've thought of following it. My problem is when I'm really depressed (like now) giving up sugar just seems to overwhelming.

I don't know about sugar specifically, but eating healthy is important for mood. Unfortunately I don't practice what I preach. I know it's smart to eat healthy, but I just can't do it when my mood goes. All I want is chocolate and chips. I'll check out the Potato book.

Well, it does help to not have so much of it; but last year, I went completely sugar free for about 7 months and it did not stop the depression at all! In fact, my depression got worse--but I don't think it was the lack of sugar that caused the depression either.

If anything, sugar helps to wake me up better than caffeine! I wonder if diet drinks are good for you with all those chemicals?

Oh, that diet crap is terrible! It affected me so bad--way worse than the regular stuff did. It worsened my depression and I actually gained more weight on that stuff than the just regualar soda.
