I'm so sorry...=( no one should have to go through that. Wallowing in self pity normally means that the person who told you that believes you are only reflecting on the bad in your life and being selfish. Honestly there's no call for that. And I would report that to your school. No school counsellor should be telling their students that. =/
Thanks for this!

For me, wallowing in self pity means feeling so sorry for myself that I cannot (and sometimes choose not to) see past myself and my misery. SOmetimes, I am so ill that I cannot help to feel sorry for myself but if I am being honest, I have to admit there are many times that I could fight it more than I choose. I get comfortable feeling sorry for myself and blaming everyone and eberything else for my troubles. It is true that I am ill, but I have to do all the work I can to get better andd stay better.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
Thanks for this!

I certainly do not think that is "wallowing in self pity." Unfortunately, you/we are going to run into people who think any depression or expression of depressed mood is "wallowing in self pity." Those people cannot genuinely help us.

That counselor might be a good source for school and career issues, but not for depressed mood problems. You deserve someone who will listen to you and carefully assess your symptoms without slapping a simplistic label on them. If there's anyone at your school you respect or think you could trust, even if they are not your assigned counselor or teacher, seek them out.

I agree that it sounds like the counselor you spoke with does not have the proper training to handle your situation/depressed moods. I hope you are able to find someone who can help you in the way that you need.

Kitty... not anyone.. there's people you can trust! You can trust people that are educates on what's the ailment is. A school counselor, however, is not trained to deal with people like us!! She doesn't know any better, unfortunately. At least it's your school counselor and not your significant other saying that you!
