This is a weird problem that I am having...
I have been looking for a new job for awhile and finally got offered a part time job with a computer networking company that really has the potential to be full time. My problem is I am afraid. Of course now that I got a new job I am getting calls for interviews from full time jobs...I don't know what to do.... The computer job is really interesting to me and I have always wanted to do it, but my major is in social services. What happens if this computer place closes down in the future and I have no experience in my degree and can't find another job...I have no formal schooling in computers.... I know that I am being stupid and thinking about the future will drive you nuts.... Any advice? Jessica

Take the computer job. You'll learn a new skill, and a more lucrative one at that. My ex has a BS in physics, but has worked in computers for the last 20 years without a computer science degree. He makes enough money to have just bought a house AND a Porsche, and they couldn't care less that he has no formal education in computers. It's probably the only field left where you can do that.

Thanks! That makes me feel better knowing that. My only fear is the lack of education on my side, but hey who is to say that I can't get a Microsoft Certification at some point. It does make me feel better to know that someone else can do it too.. Jessica

Jessica, you are a bright girl, and that is what seems to matter to folks in the computer field. Like you said, you can always pick up certification later.

Too often we sell ourselves short of what we can actually accomplish. I think going after the computer job is a good idea because a) if you are willing to learn and put in the effort, and the requirements aren't waaaaay over your head, then you will learn something new b) as related to A) you will learn something new which will expand your resume. So, if/when the computer job ends, you will have more experiences aside from social services c) What makes you think you won't be able to find a job in your specific area if this one doesn't happen to work out? You seem to have offers right now. Like I said, "Don't sell yourself short"
