I feel like stopping my anti-dep meds - just started a month ago on them and scared that they'll mess up my brain or that I will get addicted and not be able to get off of them. If depression is based on the mind then I should be able to control it with the mind (and therapy) - don't you think? Worried about messing up the precarious balance that exists in my head...

I have my own fears about taking medication for my depression; among other things. I guess this is why I often steer therapy session away from a medication alternative.
On the other hand, depression can be caused by chemical imbalances within the brain, AND it can be caused by external aggrivators (such as an abusive parent). These can be treated with medication and/or therapy...its just finding out which one is the best for you.

Well, IF depression ONLY dealt with the mind, you might think you could heal yourself with your mind. But even that isn't logical, as if you were depressed, affecting only your mind... your mind would be too confused to heal itself.
![]() Depression is not a mind or body thing... the mind and the body cannot be divided. Depression is a medical illness as well as a "mental" one. You can always go off the depression meds... so don't be too eager to do so. You have already tried this one for a month...keep going, it should be helping soon. (Meds begin to work as soon as you begin taking them, but the MORE you need it, the longer it takes to build to a level that can help you feel better. (regarding antidepressants) That's one argument for getting treatment early. Once you begin to feel better, also, don't revisit the idea of going off it, as it's the medicine that is making you feel better...and it needs many months to change and balance your brain chemicals.... at least 6 months. I don't think they cause any brain disorders, so you can rest easier about that? TC

Please see post on the drugs questions section. My med fears is near that one. So, I know what you are going through. As I said it that post, I am still trying to decide whether or not to try anti-depressants.
