I've read a bit about EMDR therapy and understand the basics of why it is supposed to work, but I'd love to hear from someone who has actually used it to find out what their experiences have been with EMDR.

i'm going to show my ignorance here. What is EMDR therapy? I'm not very good at the short forms of several things.

If you let me know what it is, maybe I can help.

I'm not quite sure what it is. It has something to do with rapid eye movement, only while awake. EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing.

The more I read, the more it seems to be for people who have suffered some sort of trauma that they can't let go of. My issues seem to stem more from a chemical imbalance than any sort of traumatic episode, so I doubt that seeing a psychologist for this would be beneficial.

I was treated with EMDR for specific trauma episodes that caused PTSD. It was very successful, though grueling. I don't know that it would be useful for depression, haven't heard of it used that way. (But I have not kept up on the literature about EMDR the way I have with some other things, so I might well have missed out on other uses or developments in research.)

PTSD is what I keep reading, too. And no, that doesn't exactly apply to my situation.

Thanks so much for the reply!

I've heard of it, and that it's used for PTSD...but when I was taking psychology in college I learned apparently there isn't a whole lot of proof it's actually effective and it's not a very common treatment. I don't really understand how it's supposed to work either way.
