I've been depressed for as long as I can remember and I'm sick of it! From a medical/therapy standpoint, I've done what I can do and it's up to me now.
Due to family history, I don't think there was a way to avoid it, so I might be a little bitter about that too.

For those of you who are dealing with your depression well, can you share what tactics you use when you run into triggers? For example, I will see or hear something that reminds me of a bad memory from 25 years ago. What do you do...in that very moment, to stop the bad feelings/thoughts? I'm unable to stop them, which means days ruined because I'm dwelling on things that happened in the past that I can do nothing about.

Note: I also have a relatively normal life, haven't done anything out of the norm as far as mistakes go, but I have a tendency to make normal "life" mistakes that everyone makes into something that only I've done (me- the ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD). I catastophosize (is that a word?) my mistakes/thoughts that to the normal person are just normal.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Take care!

Well, I was going to therapy for quite some and that helped me--but I know that is not always feasible for everyone. I find coming here helps me a lot. There are a couple of websites that I really like that have some worksheets you can download and print off:
www.selfhelp.co.uk
www.psychologytools.org
They have all kinds things for depression, bipolar, eating disorders, self-esteem, etc.

I too am unable to stop my immediate reactions to triggers. I've invested my efforts in dealing with the aftermath of the initial shocks.

When something happens, I know and grudgingly accept it will be disruptive. In summary, I come to a complete stop, practice deep, slow diaphragmatic breathing and withdraw into myself. This takes some time (varies), but it's better than the alternatives. If things are serious, I have permission from my pdoc to take an extra dose of my anti-anxiety medication.

Over time I've discarded far more from therapy than I've kept.
