my live-in boyfriend of over 3 years has been experiencing symptoms of depression for the past 9 months and whilst he has acknowledged that he more than likely has depression he is yet to do anything about it. he refuses to see a doctor or psychologist stating he will do it when he feels like it. most recently his reason is that he feels like he cant get better and maybe this is the way he is. he is self medicating with alcohol every weekend with his friends and I am at a loss as to help him anymore as he keeps pushing me away. i have tried to be optimistic and a supportive partner to him but it is effecting me constantly being pushed away from the one i love. he is highly iritable and says he dosnt know how he feels about me and isnt attracted to me with no physical activities occuring in over 10 months but he says he isnt attracted to anyone else either. he says he dosnt know why he feels this way and how to make it better. i am trying to be supportive to him and i only want him to feel better but i dont know how to help and am looking to know that this is a part of his depression or something else. i am also looking for looking for any ideas/suggestions on ways to cope and to not take it to heart so its not affecting me as negativly as it has been lately.

There is a support group in most cities called Al-Anon for people who love someone with a drinking problem. People with drinking problems usually have emotional issues, as well. They have a website with times/locations of meetings. There is a lot of wisdom in that group and it is only $1 a meeting.

Hello & Welcome, Samanthajessie! Did the depression appear out of nowhere, or do you think something happened nine months ago that may have triggered it? Has your boyfriend had a regular medical checkup recently?

i wouldnt say that he is an alcoholic or anything, its more that he uses going out with his mates and drinking as an escape for his depression he dosent deal with it just makes himself numb.

it just appeared out of nowhere. nothing happened. we went to the royal show had a great day with his family. wen we got home he was very withdrawn and just sat outside staring at the wall. i asked what was wrong - he said just tired (we had a big day) and he hasnt shaken it since then.
he hasnt had a check up with a gp either he hates going to the doctor and avoids it at every opportunity. he will only go when he is really really physically sick.
