Has anyone had any luck with St. John's Wort? or any other OTC anti-depressant?

Hello & Welcome, PennyW!

This article on recent studies of St. John's Wort appeared in PsychCentral Professional: St. John's Wort: Wilting in America (Despite the title, it's not all negative.)

Worked pretty well for me. But be careful of photosensitivity as side effect.

I have not tried it but the research is there to support it's efficacy.

No it didn't help me, but then neither have the 13 antidepressants or the 3 mood stabilisers I've tried either. Sewerrats is right though; lots of interactions including with birth control pills and other antidepressants, so be careful!

All the best,

I tried it twice, for a while, and a really "good" / "pure" brand. I tried it with and without 5-HTP which is supposed to be more powerful I guess. Did nothing for me. But neither have the 3 SSRIs I've tried recently. It's different for everyone though so I wouldn't suggest against it. I'd suggest getting a brand that is known to be pure.

drugs.com is a good site to check for side effects, interactions with other drugs you might be taking and good information on St John's Wort.

About five years ago, I tried it. I didn't take anything else with it. I thought that I was going to die. I had a pretty bad reaction to it. I would talk anybody out of it if they asked me about it.
