idk why but whenever i hear a violin i have the urge to cry REALLY hard. i just start thinking depressing thoughts or insanely happy thoughts, both of which make my tears flow like wine in aspen. anybody else get this feeling from certain instruments or music?

When beauty touches you deeply and you are taken beyond normal reality you can reach a very high spiritual plane. The beauty that is expressed calls up an answering response that can't be described with words.. You may laugh or cry but you won't be able to describe it in words. It's not a bad feeling but it can be very intense. If you look deeply into this feeling you will see that it shares something of love, happiness and peace.
It is a natural feeling.

Robflee23, is it only the violin that elicits these feelings, or do other stringed instruments have this effect on you? Have violins and music played a significant roll in your life?

Thankfully, I don't cry automatically at certain instruments. As an orchestral musician in training, that would make what I do pretty hard.

Music is supposed to make you feel something. If you're listening to music and you're feeling something, that means they are doing their job.

Do you cry at literally all music with violins in it? Do you ever cry at other instruments/voice? I could understand crying at Beethoven or Mahler but if you cry at literately every piece including upbeat bouncy music like Hoe Down from Copland's Rodeo, that's a little different. Did something happen that is in someway connected to a violin and is upsetting you?

i only cry when i hear a violin OR a cello in a sad song. i can listen to other sad music and be fine, but if theres a violin or cello, i lose it. pianos in sad music gets me upset at times too. here is the PERFECT example of a cello being used where it just tears me up inside.
