Does it work? If so, how? Schools starting and I wanna feel good before it starts, how soon befor school starts should I take St. John's wort? 1 week? 3 weeks?
I'm worried ill get Serotonin Syndrome, what can I do to prevent that? How would I know I have it so I can quickly stop taking St. John's wort? Cause I'd want to stop before it gets serious.

I take breathing medications like Dornase Alfa, Albuterol, and digestive pills (enzymes) like Creon, and sometimes Melotonin.

Hi. I have tried St. Johns wort numerous times, even using the highest quality brand I could find. I did not see that it did any good for me. In my research, I found it was also considered a nerve tonic, therefore helpful for other nervous conditions. I cannot say it wont help someone else. But it did not help me. I am a believer in herbal medicine. So, I was rather disappointed.

St. John's wort - From MedlinePlus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine
The page discusses interactions with various medications and supplements.
I have never used St. John's wort and so cannot speak from personal experience.

If you're already on medications, I would check with your doctor to make sure there won't be any interactions. I think it unlikely you would develop serotonin syndrome unless you were on antidepressants or other medications that affect serotonin (serotonin receptors are present in the gut as well). As with any antidepressant (St John's wort might be natural, but it's still a medicament), your mileage may vary, and it can take up to eight weeks for it to take effect.

I was on St John's wort for about eight weeks; didn't do anything for me. Could be because I took the wrong amount, or because I didn't get a properly standardized brand, or because my body just didn't care for the plant. It has worked for others. If you do start taking it, make sure that you've chosen a good brand that has the standard percentage of hypericin and hyperforin content (the Internet is your friend here).

I hope everything works out before school starts. School's already a handful without depression tagging along. And if you haven't, you might want to start seeing a school counsellor. They can be really helpful. And if the St John's wort doesn't work, maybe talk to your doctor about medications, or, if you can afford it, a psychiatrist.

Good luck!

Make sure you check with your doctor. I know a lot of people who have used this medication, knowing its natural, and had adverse side affects due to other meds. Be safe, and good luck.

I tried it once and I was not on any other medication. I did it on my own, the doctor didn't tell me to do it. I was pretty sorry when I did it that one time because I had a bad reaction to it. It was quite a few years ago but I remembered that I felt very tired and thought that I might die. It was very scary.

I agree with the others that say to consult with your physician.
Thanks for this!

I mentioned it to my mom and she knows a ton about my Cystic Fibrosis, in fact, she's the one who knew I had it when 4 different doctors told her I was normal. She would've said something like that's bad or something, but she didn't.

I wouldn't know why it would interact, one of my medications just helps with the mucous in my lungs, while the pills help me digest my food.

What interactions did you have with it? Why did you think you were gonna die?

I did actually take St. John's wort for a few weeks but quit and I didn't experience anything bad. Other than restlessness and a tingly face which I didn't mind much.
