Current diagnosis: chronic major depression. Is that the same as dysthymia? Never been in the severe category, but wavering between mild and moderate, trying to taper off fluoxetine after two years, and not sure if I should or not. It is an experiment. Wondering if this will ever be completely gone. Wondering if I am somehow attached to being like this. It is hard to picture me, doing well most of the time, not struggling with the low mood. Am I getting stronger or fighting a loosing battle? I don't plan on giving up, but sometimes discouraged, and tired.

Hello & Welcome, Maere!
"Major depression" and "Dysthymia" are different. Dysthymia has been used to refer to more persistent but milder forms of depression. The word is that is has been dropped from the new, fifth edition of the DSM. I think dysthymia remains in the ICD-10-CM. Regardless of label, if you have been struggling with depression for over two years, it may be practical to approach it as a chronic illness, even if it lifts or goes completely away.
