How many of you people out there are taking that many meds? My psychiatrist says it is not something to worry about but a nurse said it is a lot of medication. I am on 5 right now and have been for some years now.

How many of you people have been told you have intractable depression or treatment resistant depression? I have. I just want to feel less alone.

Hi James. I'm on 4 meds right now (3 anti-depressants, 1 augmenter), but I have been on that many before. I've actually been on about 8 different meds simultaneously. I don't know if it is normal, but I think that it is when you have "treatment resistant" depression, which is what I have. I have been hospitalized before and the psychiatrist in there who worked with me thought I was way over-medicated. I also currently have a therapist that thinks the same thing. For me, meds do absolutely nothing, and I've tried many of them. Hopefully my new psychiatrist will get me off these meds. You're definitely not alone.

I hope your journey works out.

Do you have any other diagnosis besides Depression?

Is your social situation related to your depression? Are you alone, socially isolated etc?

I've been on numerous meds at the same time.
Pdocs think meds are a miracle cure and give them out them like candy. Being over medicated is not the answer.
I cut back on my meds and added CBT, it's best thing I could have ever done.

Yes, I have been on that many before and I am med resistant. Nothing seems to bring me out of my depression. I had to be off all my meds for a while due to conflict with some blood thinners for my blood clot, but we are slowly adding them back on. I can feel a little dfferences since they added the Welbutrin.

Personally, I would refuse to be on that many. But that's just me. I've known a lot of people who are, so if it works for you, stick with it.

In USA they seem to use more meds than in Europe. I don't know a single person IRL here that are on that many meds for depression. I have two daily meds and two as needed and I feel that is a lot. Even if just one is an antidepressant. When I started taking meds it seemed unheard of to take more than one daily and maybe one PRN for almost any disorder, in the early 90s. So I don't really know what is "normal".

Ugh, I just went to see my new psychiatrist and he gave me 4 more meds. So that makes a total of 8 meds I'm on currently. I can list them:

Bupropion XL
Bupropion ER
Lamotrigine
Sertraline
Latuda
Elavil
Concerta
Klonopin

I've been on tons and tons of meds, none of them did anything positive, just a few side effects. I'm not getting my hopes up for these, I'm pretty sure they won't affect me.

And people wonder why I want nothing to do with psychiatric medication...

Honestly, OP, four medications are a lot. I understand that the doctor is the "expert", but, if I were in your shoes, I would be incredibly worried about the future stability of my mental health, especially if I were on that many medications. Lord knows what's going on with your brain, at this point... doctors are too quick to throw too many psychiatric medications at their patients, it seems.

If it's possible, I would see if there's a possibility for you to get a second professional opinion, because 4 different medications at once sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

There is no reason to be on both Bupropion XL and Bupropion ER. The max dosage for Wellbutrin (bupropion) is 450 mg, I won't go higher then 300. I take 1 pill 150 mg IR twice a day. And the klons are prolly only prn right?

I am on Wellbutrin, Topomax, Seroquel, Solian and Eltroxin. I hate having to take all these meds, but I've changed my meds myself in the past and that has only lead to episodes.

I changed meds a few months ago, and it caused a depression so deep I am still struggling to find a way out of it. I have now come to believe that if it takes me these tablets to live a normal life, then I am not going to let my pride stand in the way.

leave the doctor and fill a complaint. Seriously, adding FOUR meds at once is a bad medicine. You will have no clue where the side effects come from. And your body is gonna have rough time to adjust to all that at once.

to OP... if it works for you, then maybe it's fine, but you should care extra care of your physical health and possibly try to reduce in future when you are in better place.

If it's not working, then... it's likely too much. Depends who you arrived to this combo... if it's been by pilling meds on meds and taking pill to take care of side effects of a pill you take to help with side effects of the other pill.... then yeah, there *might* be a problem.

i come from a conservative family that wants to see me on as little medication possible. in august/september, i was taking four meds nightly. then my pdoc switched out one for another. i'm currently on pristiq, lamictal, geodon, and (weaning off of) klonopin. my parents were confused about why geodon was added and i brought this up to my pdoc since i knew that lamictal and geodon were both mood stabilizers and i didn't know why i needed to be on two. he explained that one of them is an anticonvulsant and one is an anti-psychotic that work in different pathways so i kind of get it know. i'm also going through a rough patch so i'm not super eager to get off any of the meds (besides the klonopin, which i don't want to get addicted to... i believe the others are less habit forming). if you feel uncomfortable taking 5 meds, ask your pdoc about why s/he prescribed them and what they're doing... and if it's possible to reduce them.
