Depression is a mental illness. Melancholy is a personality or way of thinking. You hear about people who are classified as being "emo", these people have the personality of Melancholy. Their goal in life is to strive for perfection. Perfection cannot be obtained, therefore these type of people often become depressed or have dark thoughts. In ancient times, Hippocrates believed that a person with this personality had "black bile" because of their dark thoughts. At least, this is my knowledge of the subject.
