My brother is very ill, very suicidal. He has rejected all of our efforts to help him. None of us know what to do for him. We love him, and want to help. The list of things we have tried to do is long. We are getting angry phone calls and strange e-mails from him. All of our efforts at intervention have failed. The psych. he was seeing in the hospital says he is manipulating us with his threats, and we should let him hit bottom....does this sound right? He is living in his car and has no income...isn't this bottom enough?? Any advise would be welcome.

Jill, I'm so sorry about your brother and also the fact that his therapist isn't of any more help than that. But maybe the therapist is right. However, that doesn't make you feel any better, does it?
We are not equipped on this board to deal with suicidal ideation or suicide itself. Here are a couple of links where you might find the answer you need. http://suicidehotlines.com/ You know... living out of his car with no income may not be "the bottom" for your brother, even if it would be for you. We all have different limits to almost everything. Best of luck.

Hi Jill,
SeptMorn is right that we as members aren't equipped to help you personally, but along with the links that she gave you if you go to the homepage here, along the right hand edge is a link that says, "Feeling suicidal, Read this first". If you click on that link it will lead you to an enormous amount of links that may be able to help you out with this. I don't know if the Psych is giving good advice or not, but I think I'd need a few more opinions before just letting it go. I wish you the best of luck with this, and I hope you'll let us know how it comes out. Greg |
