I am trying medication for the first time in my life. I was wondering; how long did it take you to find the right balance?
Everytime I go in to see my psychiatrist my dose is adjusted or I am given a new perscription. I do not feel like I am getting better. I actually feel worse. Every time we get one aspect of my depression under control, a different symptom pops up. I feel like we are playing a shell game with my brain chemistry and I am starting to wonder if and when I am going to be myself again.

Yep, crap shoot. Lots of people find benes. At one point I did but definitely a trial and error approach.

It took me a month to get adjusted to my medications. So, just take your time with it. As for medicines in general, it's a craps shoot because what works for JoAnne Smith won't work for Julie Jones.

It's rough trying to find the right combination. Apparently docs don't even really know HOW the meds work, so that's part of the problem. I even had a DNA test to discover what would work for me. Result? Medicaid won't pay for the ones that are supposed to work for me, so I'm stuck with the next best thing. Eventually you may find that a certain med will help. All you can do is try, and utilize therapy to help you get better. Good luck!

I understand meds like this: Your engine needs oil for it to work properly, well so does your brain. Meds are like the oil. But the problem is our limited understanding of how it all works together. So the docs try different kinds of oil, one at a time, to see if it works. The bad part is, they only can put the oil in by dumping the bottle over the top. SO the part that needs it gets it but the parts that don't need it, also get it.

Sounds rough. I know I had some significant issues with meds to. Don't give up.

I agree that you should not give up. It is sometimes a longterm process of trial and error. And sometimes when you hit on the right "formula" it isn't effective indefinitely. Then you're back to trial and error again. But when you have the right formula, there can be such a difference in your outlook so it's worth the hassle.

Good luck,

It took about six years of trial and error ad infinitum to find the right mix of psych meds for me.

I've been stable on my med mix since 2007.

Medication did nothing for me. I have been on several different anti-depressents, anti-psychotics and it just seems like they neither do nothing or make me feel sick. Personally I think alot of(I know some people require them..) medications are just bogus for the sake of pharmaceutical sales and have no real benefit towards "helping us." I mean, what good is it to treat depression just by saying "Oh, here, take this pill" and bam everything is better? Nope, not for me anyways. Even if it does for a bit, nobody should have to live taking pills for the rest of their lives. I'd rather smoke a joint or indulge in some psychedelic therapy for that matter though unfortunately those aren't permanent, or legal either. I have found marijuana to be one of the most helpful in (short-term) treating depression symptoms(also mdma and others).. sigh I wish it would last forever.
