So I was late & had to take a cab to the psych hospital for a meeting...
I tell the cab driver the address. To which he replies (while laughing) " oh are you crazy".... I was shocked, pissed off, & hurt tremendously. But felt like I can handle this guys ignorance, and this will be an opportunity to educate. So I did a spiel about the inappropriateness of his comment & the hurtfulness. And told him that he could end up hospitalized one day as no one is immune. He was quiet. Non apologetic & turned on the radio.
I didn't tip him. Before I got out I said that I really hope he keeps his comments to himself in the future. To which he laughed and passive aggressively told me to have a nice weekend. Omi goodness!
I've been calling the cab co to complain (unable to get through). Am I overreacting? What ignorance!

What would you have done?
I felt like crying. But I felt like I needed to try to get this guy to at least look at his impact on others. What a douchebag.

I think not tipping was an excellent idea!

Hitting people in their pockets will get their attention quicker than anything else will.

I wouldn't overly worry myself with about this rude, stupid, inconsiderate @#$%!.

He isn't ignorant, he's stupid!

Ignorance is eduable, stupidity is not.

Had it been ignorance he would have listened to what you were saying and apologized for offending you.

I'm sure there are other cab services out there who would love to have your business without being rude, insensitive and insulting ... Cast your business their way!

Thanks for this!

That is a "polite" description of this guy! He's just lucky it wasn't ME in that cab! Especially Today!! I would BLOW THAT PHONE UP until someone answers! You are SO RIGHT to do what you did! I can't believe the nerve of that guy! He may not have meant any harm but he had NO IDEA how you could have reacted to his words. Someone else might have gone into some FULL BLOWN episode over that & it could've been so much worse than it already was! Good for you for standing up to him!
Thanks for this!

Not sure I would have done anything different under stress but having the benefit of emotional distance...

I would have said nothing for ride. I'm guessing some drivers would have kicked you out... "For being crazy" (that would be his excuse.) Took a picture of his license. Got out of the cab and made sure to tell him why he wasn't getting a tip. Then I would have put a review on yelp and google+ ) yelp will delete bad reviews for companies that pay but more people read yelp.

You could still do a review. Make sure you include the fact they never returned your call. Might help empower you.

Once i told a taxi driver his comment was not helpful to me and he apologized. I do not know how i did it. Another time i did not say anything. I remained hurt and mad. In general comments are made to me about my physical disability. There have been people asking if i can have children, or even sex! It is just unbelievable. When i was in the us, all the stupid or rude comments came from non-american drivers. I am not an American, either. In some 3rd world countries like mine there is a lot of stigma and prejudices against disabled people or people with mental health concerns. They treat you as a second class citizen and believe they can tell you whatever they want. Also, they can be dismissive towards women, gay people or older people, as well
