Some of you may remember a few weeks ago, when my depression was triggered by the re-incarceration of Amanda Knox. While that was devastating for me (and her, obviously), I have never actually talked to her. She was the one who really made me passionate about prisoners, but she isn't the one I care about most. I'm not sure if I could ever decide which one that is, but I think I could narrow it down to three, all of which I've had in-depth talks with.
So, I just found out that a major network is using valuable airtime to demonize one of those three people. It made me very, very depressed. I'm not going to watch it, obviously, but now all I can think about is how hopeless her life is, and how selfish I am. And how now even more people are going to want to harm her and her family. ![]() So, I'm very, very depressed about this. What do I do? ![]() Last edited by blipsycat; Feb 14, 2014 at 08:50 PM. |

Maybe you can try to separate yourself from the situation. I think that it would be good to be sympathetic versus empathetic. Do you have a therapist?

No, I've had therapists in the past, and they didn't help at all. And I couldn't separate myself from the situation even if I wanted to (which I don't). I care about her far too much to do that.

Quote:
What would happen if you cut off all emotional ties to these people and start feeling your own emotions, listening to your own thoughts - empathizing with your own needs, first of all? And also - it might benefit to understand why you formed such strong attachments to these people. Is it because something in their story resonates with your current situation? Your thoughts or beliefs? |
