I'm a competitive athlete that cannot compete anymore due to my depression.I grew up not believing in therapy or meds. Is it possible to get through depression without any therapy or meds?

clinic depression??? No.

but many people misuse the term depression. If you mean "sad" then yes, but clinical depression is a chemical imbalance within the body.

EITHER way - repeat - either way, therapy is a good thing for every person. It simply teaches you how to better deal with lifes issues.

Gods blessings to you.
Thanks for this!

Where it's preventing you from competing, at least therapy could be something to consider.
Are there any other illnesses preventing competitive sports?

Ever considered meditation or a life coach, as an alternative?

When depression is bad enough to interfer with your normal activities it is time to seek help. You might try a therapist first and get their assessment regarding if you need a psychiatrist for meds or not. Like UselessMe said, if it's clinical depression you will most likely needs help including meds.

Thanks for your response, it's not what I wanted to read, I haven't come to terms yet to seek therapy...I guess I'm not there yet or maybe I'm blowing this all out of proportion. I am hard on myself, I grew up this way possibly due to being competitive.

I am so sorry.
For me, it would not have been possible. I can understand your dilemma. What about alternative medication?

Akua, ease upon yourself. Do whatever it takes to feel better, go to your doc and accept all the help on offer.

I am out of my comfort zone just being on this forum or any forum. I don't like asking for help and I do understand that everyone needs help, it's just hard for me to ask for it. I rather suffer in my own sorrow than ask for help, but I do believe this forum is a start and most of all I can learn from it.

YES! I feel the same way when they tell me that too. And to top it off, I've been an athlete for over 35 years.

I know it can be very uncomfortable to realize and acknowledge you might have something wrong mentally. But in my experience the longer you try to push it away, ignore it or deny it, and avoid treatment the worse it gets. Coming here is a good start, but yeah not asking for help isn't to your benefit.
