I love to sleep and dream and I hate being awake. Even when not depressed this is true. I just love to sleep.

I love sleep... But I have a hard time falling asleep. So when I do fall asleep and start dreaming it's pure bliss. But then when I wake up I feel sad.

I wish I could sleep all the time...I wish some gave some anestesy, and let me being there forever. Dreams are much better then reality and some times they makes you feel good. I feel most of the time like going to sleep...guess everything tires me.

Sleep is sometimes the best thing. I really love just not being present I guess. But even when not depressed I just love being wrapped in blankets and nice and cozy. The most unfortunate part for me--especially during the weekends I have nothing planned, is when I wake up and ask myself "why am I getting up today? There really isn't anything out there waiting for me" those days are the worst. (Thank god for roommates though because I don't want to alarm them so I eventually crawl out of bed around 1pm)

Oh most definitely, I absolutely ADORE being asleep, it's the best antidepressant known to man (and woman!). Whether I'm depressed or not, sleep is my refuge. It's my anchor in stormy waters, it's my shelter from troubled winds. When I'm tucked up under the duvets no one can get to me, infact even Waggie dog can't find me! The problem is that it can be very elusive for me, more so when I'm depressed - the very time i need it most! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Agreed! Most people like to sleep under normal circumstances. Imagine if you feel horrible or numb or whatever, sleep is just the perfect escape. The problem is getting to sleep when you're worked up or angry (as I am right now) and the staying asleep for as long as humanly possible. I've stopped the napping and hypersomnia as the pills have started kicking in, but to be honest I sometimes miss just zoning out.

I can totally relate. I use sleep for so much. Boredom, stress, sadness, avoidance of life and social situations... but it's not always a good thing.

Try to recognize the reasons as to why you're doing it. Are you actually physically tired? Is it unnatural? That may call for a physical check-up that could indicate a minor health problem or vitamin deficiency. It's worth looking into.

It is, of course, a huge sign of depression. Making goals can help. For depressed and unmotivated people, getting up and being productive can be a big stretch. Try with forcing yourself out of bed to take a shower. That may jumpstart doing other things.

Good luck, and I hope you find more energy soon.

Actually right now I am doing pretty good. I am using sleep in an unhealthy way to avoid boredom. When depressed I can sleep for hours and hours. I do have trouble sleeping at night missing stage 4 sleep and have to take a nap in the day to catch up on stage 4 sleep. This is med related I am convinced, Effexor. This is not currently the case and I am just doing it during the day to kill time and boredom. Not a good thing. I do love it so much though.

I totally sleep when I am bored. I also use it to avoid thinking of all the chores I should be doing when I'm bored. Super unhealthy avoidance but the guilt is too overwhelming.

I miss regular sleep. Falling out from pure exhaustion just isn't the same.

I love sleep but it's bitter sweet as often I feel guilty for over sleeping and being unproductive. Mornings are the worst for me, especially when I have nothing planned for the day....

I am sleeping an awful lot lately, myself. It's what I would rather do than anything. But I hate being this way.

Me too. I am very concerned about going back to an 8 hour a day job.

If you have an iPhone there is an app called sleep cycle which can help determine if you are moving around in your sleep and also tracks when you go to sleep and wake up. It also has a dynamic alarm that will go off up to a half hour earlier if your sleep patterns change. I have used it periodically when I am having difficulties getting up.
Thanks for this!
