Haven't posted here in ages. I started getting help for depression last autumn. Since then I've realised that anxiety is a much bigger problem for me. It is mainly work related. These last few months have been terrible. I am very behind with my work ("customer facing" if you want) that I worry I might lose my job. I am crippled with anxiety to the extent that I can't get myself to do the simplest tasks. Which is ridiculous really.

I am doing CBT. I am also on 30mg citalopram. At the moment it feels like I am trapped and will never be able to function normally. I'm pretty desperate, and I have no idea what to do about it. Any ideas/experiences/hand holding appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: I am pretty much 'off grid' at the moment but will try and check back here once a day or so.

Hi there, thanks. No, not specifically for this problem. Can it help with severe anxiety?

I've never had success with meditation/autogenous training type methods though (have tried the latter for insomnia). I don't seem to "get" it. Maybe it's possible to learn meditation though. I'll look into it.

When I was taking lexapro for depression (similar to citalopram), I experienced such severe anxiety that I had to stop taking it...perhaps a revisit of the medication might be in order? Other than that, and with respect to your anxiety, which I have felt at other times, I often repeat to myself, "like all other things, this too shall pass". It has become (keeping with the meditation theme) somewhat of a mantra for me. It doesn't always work, but it does help me get through some tough times.
Thanks for this!

Thanks everyone. I'm travelling at the moment, and only have sporadic access to the internet.

Unfortunately I can't get myself to think "it will pass", because the longer the anxiety keeps me from doing normal work tasks the worse the situation will get. And that's what dominates my thoughts and then reinforces the anxiety. It is like a vicious circle.

I am not sure myself what the root causes of my anxiety are. I think I will need counseling to explore the causes of the anxiety as well as the depression. I'm only doing CBT at the moment. I have very low self esteem which I think is linked.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I guess I can only take one day at a time, and slowly try to regain control of my life.
