I am British, but live in the US. I take medication and see a therapist, and it took a lot for me to start that process. My family are against me taking medication and think that therapy is a ridiculous American thing. Do you come across the same thing with your families?

I think many Brits do have a 'put up and shut up' view on life and problems haha... and yes many do not get the American acceptance and openness to therapy.

My own family however are supportive and have encouraged me to get the help I need. I know my Mum frowned a little when I was prescribed meds... but she knows I've been dealing with this for years now and for a change she didn't rebuke it.

I have received most of my therapeutic sessions from my psychiatrist. I see her about every two months. I don't think you would get much more under the NHS unless you were having a crisis.

I think the care you get under the NHS is as good, if not better, than the private sector, and I have experience of both.

My family are very accepting of my need for help and they share my frustration at the NHS not providing adequate support where I live. I really need to see a pdoc for a med review but have been refused, unless I start harming myself there is no chance of that changing.

Glad the NHS works for you, perhaps I need to move to Somerset.

Not British but I come from The Bahamas, a former British colony. Our government offers little for mental health patients unless there is a serious issue, such as a suicide attempt, they then send you to a place called Sandilands. At first my family was a bit concerned about me going on meds aswell, but eventually after learning of the seriousness of my condition, they just accepted it. Wishing you the best.
