I'm 20 years old. Many might say that I'm too young to understand what depression is. But I feel as if I cant take it any longer. It is too heavy a burden to carry. I dont want to go back to harming myself. Also i suffer from low self esteem. I see how happy my friends are in their new relationships and their lives and I feel like a failure. My depression is the result of both family and personal issues. And I have no idea to cope with them

Hi happyfeet, I'd say that depression doesn't need to have age limits imposed on it to make it real. If you have depression, you have depression. If it's real, it's real regardless of age.
And there are going to be plenty of people on here who can relate to the way, you're feeling, empathize with you or offer you support.
I don't know if it might be possible for you to share some of your feelings a bit more with you family or friends as well???
But either way depression can really effect your self esteem so just remember you are not a failure, the depression may be telling you that but..............
So if you want to talk a bit more about what's going on for you, we're here...........
And welcome to PC!!!
Alison
Thanks for this!

Hi happyfeet. In my opinion, no one is too young to know what depression is. I started medication for depression when I was 10.

I know what you mean about looking at your friends and family around you...I'm 32 and I have no career to speak of and no children though I'd like some. I can't help but feel isolated sometimes, like others don't understand because they seem so successful.

But it has nothing to do with you being a failure!!! I haven't been here at PC long, but I have already encountered people in similar situations who are so supportive and awesome. There are people out there that understand and who are willing to talk.
