Hi,

I am new to your forum. I have been treated for chemical depression for 20 years. Ups and downs throughout. I am 47, and am having yet again a rough time. I tend to self medicate along with Dr. prescribed drug. T 3's, liquor, pills to make me drowsy, whatever I think will work to make me physically feel better. Not doing well at all now. Dr. helpful, though I told her I can't keep going in these circles. Today, I have a hangover and feel terrible. If any one has any words of wisdom, advice, or general info, I would appreciate it.

Thank you
Aja47

Hi Aja,

Welcome to PC.
I'm worried about you taking the meds and drinking alcohol.
I'm sure you know that this is a very dangerous method.
Are you drinking the alcohol just so you can sleep? Be honest with your doc about what you are doing.
Perhaps, your doc can prescribe something to help with your sleep or lack of.
Please keep us informed of how you are doing.
I truly am worried about you.
Sending you hugs,
Linda

Spit, I pm'd you but haven't heard back from you. Are you OK? I am also worried about you.

I also see you are from Washington? Cool. Hello fellow washingtonian. Good to met you.

Can you tell me what it is that is inside you that is bad?
I will help you all I can.

Same goes for you Aja. I will help the both of you all I can.

I have fought severe depression since I was 14 and I'm now 52, so I do know what you are going through. If it weren't for the two anti-depressants I take, I don't know what I'd do.

Let me know how you are doing. You can pm me anytime.

Hugs to the both of you,
Linda

Drinking excessive alcohol (I sometimes have a glass of wine or two & it seems to have no effect on my meds) can render your meds ineffective so that may be why they don't seem to help. You also have to be careful cuz some meds can intensify the effects of the alcohol so you will get drunk a lot faster with less alcohol.

A friend's son just went to juvenile detention for drunk driving (120 mph on a dark country road--he could have been killed) & he takes an anti-depressant. The mix can be very dangerous.--Suzy

Anything that doesn't work very well, probably should be ditched. Liquor (and many drugs) is depressing so it can't work for depression, no matter what. If one is serious about one's depression, I think a "fair" and real test could be decided on and made with a med or combination of meds under a doctor's supervision to see if meds help. From what I've read, I'd also work hard at psychotherapy at the same time I was trying whatever meds were recommended. I'd do a lot of research as certain meds work for certain types of people, etc. and see if I couldn't help my doctor decide on which ones, if any, I wanted to try. Depression is a "problem" similar in many ways to other medical problems and I'd approach it like I do my other problems and get a bit of comfort/interest in doing so. It's hard to solve a problem by avoiding it.

Hi Aja,

I kinda know where you're comin from. I'll whatever it takes to numb the pain too. I've just spent the last 4 days drunk. But I kno it's not really the best thing to do. I don't really have any advice - as u can see I'm in a hole myself. But I can say hang on in there. I know it's difficult. But the fact you're reaching out for support is a good sign.

We're here for u.
