Today is my first counseling session. I am so scared I can't breath. Is this a normal reaction? It is somebody I know and trust. Does that make it worse? Should I rather go to a stranger?

I was literally shaking in my shoes. My wife had to get me to focus to keep it under control. Now that I have been doing it for a few years - you see all the other people there are in the same place.
It is NOT a place of "judgement". It is one of the few places on earth where those who are dealing with mental illness are embraced. So, I say CONGRATULATIONS to you for having the courage to seek help. I know it is not easy, but it is a great, great thing for you. |

In my experience, counsellors can be rather judgmental, critical and not believe or ingnorant towards mental health conditions. Some have said they don't believe I have illness and they have made unhelpful remarks about me. They put blame on individual character, way of thinking, reacting to situations etc..rather than on circumstances or people making you feel bad. I have seen different counsellors and therapists but not found one I can really be open with and trust, feel is right for me and who I feel is genuinely caring and supportive. I have issue with therapists not offering contact in between sessions.

Just cos they have qualification and are in position of authority doesn't mean they know better, are right in what they say to you and you don't have to follow/agree with it.
