[a bit complex...but bear w/ me]:

recovering addict suffering from depression/anxiety...been on Prozac for 4 years...every once in a while it stops working (sometimes for weeks). friend of mine who was addicted to heroin suggested Effexor. asked my psych about it...she sed pristiq is better...the cat's meow.

went on pristiq for a week & developed pretty bad bladder/urination issues, so I went back to Prozac, 'til it stopped working again.

psych suggested giving the pristiq another shot...so, I've been on it for a week again w/ no bladder issues, but I don't feel a damn thing. what's worse is the fact that...since the Prozac is leaving my system, I feel really agitated...at everything...so:

1) should I wait longer...???...how long does it take to kick in...???
2) what's the huge advantage of pristiq over Prozac...???...my psych tells me she gets rave reviews from her patients & that it's fantastic stuff (especially for recovering addicts). But I'm not feeling anything but stressed; & I should have has some effect, even after only one week.

any thoughts or experience...???

thanx,

dox

Pristiq is not better or worse. We are all too different. What's good is what works for you. You have to give it six weeks and see. If Prozac pooped it pooped. Very common for all of them. Pristiq don't work after six weeks....next

To be honest with you, I'm very leery about all these new anti depressants that seem to pop up every week. The side effects are alarming.

Have you ever been on Celexa? It's an older med, like Prozac. I've been on it for years, and it's been very helpful...no problems with side effects. That's me, tho'...everyone is different. My boyfriend takes it, too, and has no problems with it. You might want to give it a try.

Pristiq is the active metabolite of Effexor. So it's basically the same stuff. I know Effexor is proven to be more efficient than Prozac, Celexa, Paxil, but those three have fewer side effects so they're usually the ones you start on.

That is true Pristiq is the active metabolite of Effexor. Just a way for Pfizer to extend their patent and keep selling at higher prices. I have taken them both and after much research I did figure out that Pristiq really is a cleaner version of Effexor. They both have a set of active metabolites that are somewhat different. Some people do good on Pristiq but not Effexor. We are all very different in how we metabolize and react to these drugs. You really have to try and see. I can throw a dart just as well as my pdoc can.
