I have been sick with a cold, flu and fever for about the past three weeks. In this time, my depression has gotten so bad it feels like I'm not even on meds. Is there a legitimate link between cold/flu and bipolar depression? I don't know how much longer I can deal with this. I'm either sick or incredibly depressed or worse both. Will this go away??? Why do my meds stop working???? Please help. Thanks.

A few questions to consider.
Have you taken anything to alleviate the cold/flu symptoms that might interfere with your meds?
Have you missed/ forgotten to take your meds at all, or have you had any vomiting?
Just asking because if you're not absorbing your meds efficiently because of your illness then it could explain things.

There is a link between viral illness and depression, it isn't uncommon for people who have never suffered MI to become clinically depressed following a viral illness. Glandular Fever is often associated with post viral syndrome. Have you seen your doc? 3 weeks is quite a long time for a virus to be bugging you (pun intended), if you've not had Glandular Fever get your doc to run a blood test.

In the meantime, take it easy, plenty of fluids and hope you feel better soon.
Thanks for this!

All my energy was going into fighting moderate depression recently (I was winning) and then I got real sick. Been sick three weeks too. It zapped all my energy. As the sickness is going away I am feeling better overall. I don't think it had anything to do with meds it just took my energy.

My depression gets worse when I get sick because I am trying to be physically well I neglect the mental well part. Another one I've learned to watch for when being sick is medication interactions. Those can really have an affect on if meds works as well.

Hope you feel better soon and take care of yourself.
